not owning a DMR, but hoping, after the R10 comes out, that the DMR will drop into a more reasonable price bracket...

can you take a picture of a gray or white card, and use that as the whitebalance setting for the rest of the time in that area?

can you dial in the kelvin, and use that?

-Steven

Yes,yes and yes.

The DMR produces exceptional colour if you use this method.

Now all Auto WB and it is jumping around quite a bit.

All at ISO 200, f/2, 1/45s, AWB

Also, shooting bursts with AWB it was jumping around with this scene, like it did with firmware 1.1. However, I shot a burst just out my window and it was consistent.

Charles:

The framing changed between shots and the AWB probably picked a different WB. AWB is really no different than matrix metering. It will get it right a lot of time, but other times, things fool it.

If you put the camera on a tripod will it do this too?

Same here.

I'm waiting for my R9 to come back from NJ, so the DMR is out of commission. Has anybody tried the 4GB cards yet? With v1.2, the DMR would get confused after 2GB if the camera went to sleep mode or if you turned the camera off and on. I wonder if they fixed this.

Peter:

When I had the cells fixed in my R9, Kindermann tuned a global -1/3 stop into the metering for me. Now it seems to be near perfect no matter which metering mode I use. Matrix seems dead on too.

This was an adjustment they can make via the computer hookup used for diagnostics. The R9 will allow an adjustment by the user to the matrix mode only, but if a technician does it, he can change all modes.

Yes, it does it on a tripod also, not as much, though.

I don't mean to make too much of this, it is not a big deal. I know from the previous firmware that the AWB could jump around. I noticed with 1.3 that the AWB seemed much improved as I was shooting some shots around the house. I saw that it was getting fooled by the scene above so I put the color chart there and took a bunch of snaps.

I went over to the railway workshops today to give the version 1.3 AWB and ISO 1600 setting a real test under mixed fluorescent and mercury arc lighting. It didn't get the light balance quite right - the attached was upped by about 200 degrees K - but it got a whole lot closer than version 1.2 and the ISO 1600 setting produced significantly less noise.

Taken with a Vario-Elmar 28-90 at 28mm, handheld

Rob,

to my knowledge this change to mertering can only be done with the film back on the camera..... am i correct ?

thanks

It can be done by Leica when the R8/R9 is hooked up to the diagnostic program. It is a global change in the metering, not the custom adjustment to the Matrix metering done with the R9 and film back.

Wow - got outside today and the 400, 800 and 1600 iso shots are SIGNIFICANTLY better, AWB is much closer, if not spot on.

i'lll say it but not sure i mean it -- but to help me with my side hobby - i shoot indoor action shots for the local gymnastics team the following would be a nice

1. with the quality now at 1600, they should consider 3200 iso ( i can always do with the

2. i would have liked to have seen 5 fps, but don't know if that is also a hardware or file size issue and not just firmware .

perhaps these are R10 features

Bottom line: At this point i feel leica has re-committed to the R-line !! i'm going to celebrate and buy something new from leica !! They have shown commiment to me - now i will show commitment them - a cycle of enjoyment for both of us

Beyond that it's also an actual mechanical shutter cocking mechanism that is fed by the DMR motor-drive. So it is indeed unlikely to happen through firmware updates.

Cheers,

This has been my experience as well. I just got my R9/DMR back from Leica. I had bought the R9 used and when it was in for a quick checkup, they noticed that it had been dropped at some point and the focal plane was off. It took awhile, but they fixed it and matched the DMR specifically to the body. I am actually shocked at how sharp the DMR is now. It used to be sharp, but now it is much sharper. It is also easier to focus, so something must have been very wrong with it. And I bought it LN- from KEH. I don't blame them, some real bastard dropped the thing and then sold it to them without disclosing it and I used it that way unwittingly for two years.

Anyway, a fresh start. The other good news is that firmware 1.3 is far better. I am seeing dramatically lower ISO noise than before and the AWB and LCD color look much better. I can't wait to try it out for something more serious.

On the downside, being without the DMR since May has made me forget how small the LCD is and how slow the image writing/preview and zooming on the LCD are. And how big and heavy it is! The DMR has some nice ergonomic advantages over the M8, but in these areas it really shows its age and nature as a back rather than an integrated camera. It is nothing that is not capable of being worked through, but hopefully the R10 will be better in this respect.

I havent seen any C1 develops, bt here is one from the new 1.3 at ISO 800

I an surprised at the noise control This is with C1 default noise reduction and sharpening.

The 100% crop is in the focus area.

Since i have put on fimware 1.3 i am much happier with the camera's overall performance (out of the box), however i am noticing that whenever i charge the battery i need to reset the time and date ?

anyone else noticing this with DMR firmware V1.3 & R9 ?

I found the clock settings default to 01/01/2000 every time I changed the battery with firmware 1.1. It does not seem to have been fixed with 1.3.

that usually means that the small power supply (small button battery?) or some caqpacitive storage that keeps the timer going when the battery runs down is bad. Has nothing to do with the firmware.

I would have it checked out.

regards
