Keith I have the Leica one which is matched to the lens. It is very good, despite its plastic body. Some users prefer a cheaper finder designed for other types of camera and some will answer your question. So yes, you can use any finder matched the 35mm focal length and it is most useful in bright outdoor lighting; less so indoors.

I have the optical (36mm) Leica finder you mention, left over from when I had my X1. I have toyed with using it on my M3 if I ever get a 35mm lens.

They might be slightly more expensive, but they are nice as David said. I know of one also for sale in my country, if you are keen to try one, PM me.

I've a mint 36mm Leica one for sale right now, relegated my X1 to a pocket snapshooter now I've got a CL  £100 delivered in UK for any fellow forum member (on ebay for £110+p&p)
