and a vote for the zeiss 25mm 2.8-it has become my "bodycap' lens. For some reason it fits the framelines in the M8 very well, moreso than any other lens I have. It has left me in a quandary tho, I now have a 21 elmarit and 28 elmarit that don't see any use, it has taken up the slack of both those lenses. so I was thinking of selling both but to finance what? the cron 28 which I have always lusted over, or the WATE?

I am really surprised no one has stepped up and recommended the 24mm 2.8 asph. This is one of the best lenses in the M stable and gives a 32mm effective field of view on the m8. They seem to be on the used market for not much more then the 28mm asph sells for new. A 24mm, 35mm, 50mm combo is an ideal coverage selection in my opinion.

Ken,

The problem is that the 35 and 24 are sharing the "same" pair of frames in the M8 finder.

Lucien

And why is that a problem?

I would think it's bliss to see what is the FOV of the other lens in my pocket without changing the lens or even fiddling with the lever!

Since these are scarce as hens teeth and none of my normal suppliers have a clue as to when they will be available, I need a 28 or something close pdq. Suggestions? Experiences?

Thanks for all replies.

.

Only very few have tried the new 28/2.8 asph, which is said to be very good and compact.

However, many photographers have tried and used the M 28/2.8 lenses which Leica has supplied before launching the new lens together with the M8. The experience of MANY photographers has been that those previous 28/2.8's are marvelous lenses.

So, why don't you give one of those (used or at least previously owned) lenses a try? They are readily available and even carry a decent price tag.

Michael, I had a 28 Elmarit. It was a great lens. To this day I regret selling it. I sold it before the M8 was ever announced.

now you are really killing me...I have a feeling I will regret selling my (III, CDN) elmarit 28! It is very smooth if you know what I mean.

If I had to buy a used elmarit I would go for the only the third and fourth versions.

A question to be posed to people in the forum that are "close" to Leica Co. .... definitely, there is something strange about the Asph 28 2,8... a small mistery... It was clear thet it would be a VERY WELCOME lens both for traditional M users and moreover for M8 customers : 28M8 eqv. 35 FF.. standard for many... price good for people accustomed to brand prices... lightweight, compact aspect... I have a 28 2,8 pre asph, codable... decided to wait for coding when bought M8... Asph was appealing.. sure many people in the same situation... and now seems it is quietely phasing out... disappearing...

1) A gross marketing mistake ? should have it to be priced higher ? Doesn't pay its cost ?

2) WHERE it come from ? Outsourced... ?

Oldtime Leica lovers like me feel intrigued by such stories... we remember similar "mistery stories" like the Elmarit 180 2,8 for Visoflex... 3 months on US price list then disappeared... the Summicron 50 with Compur shutter... the first Lux 35 Aspherical...

We'll know something about, I hope... a reasonably priced standard listed lens is maybe on the way to become a high priced collectible....

We actually seen them being made in front of us last month. The issue is there is a huge backorder on it. Really nothing more . It's being made right there in Solms in the main factory and the bench next to itwas the WATE , two very popular lenses and both backordered.

Okay my semi rational decision... can see with the magnifier on all the time... fastest wide angle Leica lens... the images from it are superb on the M8.

Pardon my editing, Guy - yes, all true. The price is pretty steep, however (didn't stop me form taking the plunge, unfortunately...)

I read that CV was discontinuing the 28/3.5, so I decided to pick one up while they're still available (w/ LTM8.) Thought I'd use it mainly for the small size, but it turns out it's a great lens in it's own right! I prefer the lower contrast of several of the CV lenses on the M8 in a lot of situations. And they do not lack at all in resolution.

If you read Sean's evaluations, you quickly see that the differences among many of the M-mount lenses from all manufacturers are really quite subtle, often preference issues. Times are good for rangefinder enthusiasts!

Yes they sure are and right now getting a leica lens is like pulling teeth. The CV are nice lenses and so are the Zeiss. I went for the juggler all the way around. i figured no matter what i can always sell for what i paid or a little less and won't take a bath like i did with Canon. I'm somewhat lazy and bought all coded lenses stuck the leica filters on turned on the IR filter and just forget about everything else and shoot. This makes it simple and that is why i love the leica systems. i don't need bells and whistles. I came real close to buying the CV28 Ultron though and for folks that have them i have heard nothing but great comments. That is the beauty of the M system over most system out there the choices are huge on lenses. That to me is all good

Now that i have all the main lenses in place i will start looking for some old relics about the same age as me with the same soft and creamy look. LOL

I second that motion! The Zeiss 25/2.8 stays on my M8 most of the time.

However ... as far as the framelines go, the Zeiss 25/2.8 brings up the 28mm framelines rather than the 24mm framelines unless you change the mount. I assume you changed the mount on yours?

That was a good move. It really is a sweet little lens isn't it?

We are very lucky in the range of great lenses available to us.

Cheers,

Sean

Guy, that's hilarious!

Next time the wife points out my gradually expanding relic of a waistline I'll simply tell her that it's the "soft and creamy" look that's all the rage on the forums these days.

On the other hand .. nah ... she won't get it.

I was waiting for someone to pick up on that one, more like the crusty and brittle look with a lot of CA. LOL

I got the relevant information from another forum member how to order the lens mount from zeiss and had it ready when the lens arrived. I now have to find some time to send the mount to John Milich for milling. Lucky we are both in Brooklyn.

Be advised that the only way to pay zeiss is an interbank transfer, which adds to the cost, citibank charge me 25? I think. That plus the euro exchange brought the whole cost closer to 100 dollars, minus coding. worth it tho, I bought it after the price drop at popflash.

Hi Luigi,

What makes you believe that it is being phased out?

Cheers,

Sean

... Was just an impression of mine given that seems very few have been delivered and backorder is ramping up... my dealer, after a discussion with the Italian importer (back office... not me present) told me "anyway, better you don't even order it now... cannot tell me a schedule... let's wait 1-2 months and see..." ; I told him I wouldn't like to be exposed to the risk of some kind of surprising price hike (Noctilux isn't in my plans, but took note...) , he replied that he would have discussed further with the importer, about be assured of the current price fixed if I order now but scheduling is undefinible ... that is the reason for I made my observation regarding the pricing... I'll go at the dealer in 2 or 3 days and see...
