R4 shutter problem

following on from a recent post I made I would like to ask if anyone knows about this.

When camera is in auto mode and a wide aperture is selected, I am of the understanding that tif 1000th is not fast enough then the shutter will try to increase it's speed beyond 1000th and then will start to demonstrate eratic behaviour like not exposing the whole of the frame, instead of overexposing the whole frame. Any thoughts out there? thx j

Provided that I have not direct experience with R4, time ago I have heard an italian authorized repairer speaking about the shutter of R4 : seem to remember that before a certain s/n about all the shutters had "strange electronic behavior" in "certain conditions"... could be fixed at factory only or so...do not remember anymore... but I think maybe I can get the info about the s/n before which the problem existed. I am SURE the story was as I write here, even if were 8-10 years ago, and the repairer was a serious and well known one (and had no reason at all to tell something untrue) : can be related to the problem you quote.

John...

In all automatic modes you will have overexposure if the amount of ligth is to much...

So the behavior of your R4 is a result of a defect shutter...!

I had a similar defect with my R4 ... Leica wanted 1000 bug's to fix it....

So I decided to get a secondhand R7 to replace my R4.....

thanks for the comments, in reply I will confirm that camera was serviced by Leica not that long ago and works perfectly in all modes apart from when shooting in aperture priority and using say f2 and not checking that the speed has risen beyond 1000th sec. It will then maybe expose ok but every now and then will leave an unexposed horizontal band at the top of frame ie bottom of film chamber. If i make sure the speed doesnt go beyond 1000th then works fine. If anybody else out there has an R4 then maybe you could check for me.

Do this by setting camera to aperture priority, asa something like 400-800 and open lens to say f2. take back off of camera and point at sky or bright light. Looking through viewfinder make sure camera's chosen speed is beyond 1000 at top of display and now look through flm chamber toward light. fire shutter and what i see in every say 4 or 5 releases is a darkened lower frame when in reality you shoulsd see full frame. now change asa to 12 and try again and you should now see this full frame as speeds will have dropped below 1000th.

thanks in advance all you R4 users! regards John

Have a trip here :

Summilux

(French is not so difficult...)

You can find the story I quoted above ! Under 1.600.000 electronics problems...

And other interesting detail: seems (I red quickly, not so sure...) that the shutter (=Minolta XD) could reach 1/2000 in auto...

In another page you can find the (French...) manual : I gave a look, in a page there is something about situations with "impossible" measuring...

If you haven't the manual of your own, surely can find an english PDF somewhere in the web.

John..

If were you I would not hesitate to look for another R4 that does not have this behavior.

If you do not find an R4 that pleases you look for a good R5 - 7 ...

Maybe some in this forum do not agree but the R4 is in my eyes the most unreliable camera in the R line...

I could not go around with your camera by knowing that it has such a behavior....

Salvatore, my R4 works fine and I only have this problem in the circumstances I have described. I only bought it as a second body to my R8 anyway. Both of these don't actually get used very much as I do prefer my M cameras. As for being unreliable, I think that the pre 160000 cams had a few electrical bugs but this was sorted after this serial. I haven't used the R4 much but will say that it is nice to use and the viewfinder is actually just as bright as the R8's. Come on all you R4 owners out there, try yours out and let me know if it behaves the same as mine, please.

Update to the above. I just spoke to the very helpfull chap over at CRR Luton and he explained that some R4's do this and some don't. The camera can actually be limited to 1000th by adjustment but if used within it's limitations will work fine. From now on I will pay more attention to the speed picked by the camera! regards all John

Hello John..

My R4 has a serial nummber which is at about 162 ....and I had all problems people can have with this camera...

I know the R4 is a very nice camera, very compact and very easy to use... I love it also for the big viewfinder....however ... as long as you know what the camera does your all set...

Cheers

Salvatore
