I don’t use my SF40 that often, and only on my TL2, but I think that’s right.  I just leave the flash on Auto and then set the camera however I want it.  It seems to work, but then I’m not very good with flash - it’s the only time I chimp.  The flash, for me, is really for backlit fill-in or where shadows are strong and will interfere with the final image.

I put mine on TTL and have all the shutter speeds available, but let me read the manual for you to confirm:

Furthermore, in the A, TTL and M modes of the flash unit, flash operation with faster shutter speeds is also possible with cameras with the appropriate specifications (HSS).

There is no problem on TTL mode, Auto& TTL, in growing sync speeds unless you try to put Auto ISO, some times has odd behavior. As well HSS doesn't work in Manual mode.
