I wish Leica would consider a medium format rangefinder. Like the M but similar to the X1D and GFXR.

They could use the sensor for the S and keep as much of the M as possible.

Would anyone else like this?

I asked Stefan Daniel the very same question about 5 years ago. He replied with a laugh at that time.

5 years a very long time ago now.

But maybe the Fuji GFXR will do anyway.

The R in the GFXR has nothing to do with rangefinders.

The last real rangefinder from Fuji was the famous Texas Leica. I was a fool to sell it.

Nennnh - the Fujis were "poseurs." This was the real Texas Leica: http://www.novacon.com.br/odditycameras/combgra.htm

As to an S in M clothing - exactly what do we mean? A real rangefinder, or just a mirrorless EVF (eeeew! no thanks!)

Can't use M lenses in any case - not enough coverage (except maybe 135 or 90 in the close focus range). Existing S lenses would be grossly oversized - there's a reason Hassy and Fuji have introduced entire new lens lines for their "mirrorless MF" cameras - designed for purpose.

And Leica doesn't have time or staff to be messing with a new lens system - not until the S and L lens lines get substantially more complete (a couple of dozen lenses for each.)

Perhaps you will get your wish on April 1st.

Plaubel Makina ...

A medium format digital M would hardly be an M camera - the mount would surely be too small, you'd need an entirely new range of manual lenses, and after going to all that effort would you really want to have a new coupled rangefinder?  I can hear the cries now - more MP, we want an EVF and where's the autofocus?  Meanwhile, we have the L mount mirrorless cameras and the S digital single lens reflex camera ...

Non-starter.

I used a Makina 67 alongside a Mamiya 7 and Leica M6 and M7. Fun RF Times.

Don’t see Leica ever doing a MF M.  I’m not sure how much Leica is committed to the S long term. Or whether the SL might evolve to include a larger sensor variant. But an X2D with a better VF might intrigue, if Hasselblad demonstrates better reliability and longer term viability.
