Let's do two more. Nikolaus Gross was murdered by the Nazis on the 23th of January 1945 after being convicted of treason. He was a father of seven.

This is from a Leica Q, f/1.7 1/125sec ISO 800.  Manual everything, using highlight detection in the viewfinder.  The highlights are little over overexposed, but what the hell.  No idea if this is the same sensor as an M10 (if anyone knows, please tell me).

I wish this @Chaemonodude would just be quiet. Way too much derailing the discussion (with his useless comparison), which was 'Exposing for Highlights' on the M10. The M10, as much as the Q, is terrible when you have a bright light source (Sky, Sun, etc pp) in the frame. Both cameras WILL blow out the highlights if you are not careful (hence you will NEED to expose for highlights in high contrast situations). Sony's cameras handle such situations (high contrast scenes) better from my experience.  @mkenaylor the M10 will pretty much behave like the Q, you will have a bit more room in post processing as the M10 saves more details in the shadows. Apart from that there isn't much you can do. I switched from Sony to Leica a few years ago (first the Q, since last year the M10) since then I try to avoid such situations where the Q/M10 clearly falls a bit short. But it's not a deal breaker, it's you need to know the quirks of your camera. ;)

Thank you for your reply and I agree with you (and others) that we could do without Chaemono derailing the topic.   I've ordered my M10-P today and look forward to it arriving some time next week.

Well, I do not like too much when you attack users that contribute here. You might agree or not but you can consider the arguments.

I can post a comparison between the M10 sensor and the ALEV III if anyone is interested to see just how weak the M10 is in the highlights...

I'd like to see that. I got my M10 just after I put my Alexa EV up for sale and therefore I no longer have access to it.

I may be able to do a test with an ALEXA Mini at work...

I wonder if Arri has a patent on the dual gain read architecture, because nobody else does this. Fuji had their SuperCCD, which had separate receptors for a highlight specific exposure, but that'a about it.

I’m waiting for the delivery of the M10D, once I have it I can do a test. I don’t have a raw liecense with my Amira so it might be better if you did the test on the Mini. Maybe there is an option for the screenshot to be saved in arri raw like on the EV.

Arri must have a patent because what other camera has 14+ stops at ISO 800? None. Hardly even have that at base ISO to begin with! Especially when you start looking at stops over middle grey...

wouldn’t it be nice if arri made a stills camera... still excited to see how  the Zeiss ZX1 will turn out.

Hi There

Well, the sensor on the Q and the SL have nothing to do with the sensor in the M10.

However - the highlights problem on the M10 (which I do acknowledge) is really limited to the ‘pull’ 100 ISO (which is why in a recent firmware upgrade the base ISO for auto ISO has been increased to 200).

Basically, if you’re in high contrast situations then you had better shoot at 200 ISO. Here’s a link:

All the best
