I appreciate that many here roll their eyes (in the very least) at pointless speculation, including me.

So, in the spirit of hypocrisy, here is some speculation...

Now that the S3 will have 64MP, it should provide Leica enough head-room to up the resolution of both the SL and M potentially. (I had thought that at least one reason higher resolution options hadn't been offered on the SL or M was the protection of the halo S product line).

The M, it seems, is not due for a major revision for some years - if we follow Leica's usual cycle - but the SL....

I really enjoyed the SL for the time I owned it - the quality, and especially that still-to-be-beaten EVF. It was nice with the M lenses too - especially the fast ones. But overall I thought the deficit was weight and bulk. I know not everyone wants more than 24MP (including me much of the time), but I think 42-46MP would now be smart for the SL's evolution.

(But then... we felt sure the S 007 was going to have higher res, didn't we?)

Anyway, feel free to speculate here... or flame away. ;-)

Exactly my thoughts, too. My guess for the SL2 is 36MP though, not 42 - 46, but we will see.

I have to concur that 47MP seems the number. One does wonder, though, if like the M series or perhaps as a nod to Panasonic's two model range, continue to sell the SL1 alongside the SL2 for sometime.  Might they offer SL2/24?  Admittedly not likely they'd introduce two new SL models at once, though perhaps one might be one might be largely a re-badge?

Why not offer a variable menu setting that allows the user to select 47 or 24mp? They do this already with jpeg settings.--lt

Presumably for similar reasons to Panasonic/Sony/Nikon mirrorless FF offerings... the ability to deliver an altered experience/feature set, more aimed at video or low light use for example at reduced cost over the top line camera with more pixel sites.

The Panasonic interview posted in the other thread gives more info and some clues.

I'd wager the SL2 will use the same 24mpx/47mpx sensors ..... or a derivative thereof with one camera aimed at videography and general use and the larger sensor one at stills/landscape/portraiture etc. The internals can remain much the same .... all you are doing is halving the load on the processor by using the smaller sensor to enhance video performance.

Note the video stated that firm technical details and specifications will be available early next year .... NOT that the camera will be available then...... probably much later in the year is more realistic.

I think the silence about the SL2 indicates nothing ...... and like the original I'd expect some teasers in a few months time followed by the release of the actual camera almost immediately after. I wouldn't be surprised if I had one by Xmas. Leica invariably no longer reveal things until they are in production and ready to ship. Kauffmann let slip over a year ago that the body would be less brutal, so I think things are much further along than some might think.
