jaapv Posted September 23, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) We have been walking our dogs here regularly. Now they claim they have to cut it down for some tree disease... I suspect it is simply harvesting. Not pleased. At all... Welcome, dear visitor! andybarton Posted September 23, 2018 Share #3 Posted September 23, 2018 Managed forests get cut down all the time - and then replanted. If they are diseased, then they need to come out. If it is harvesting, then that's just part of the cycle of the forest. It's what makes them managed and sustainable. It's always upsetting when you see a landscape that you have known like this change, but it's when they cut the trees down and replace them with a car park or shopping centre that the real upset happens.
jaapv Posted September 23, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted September 23, 2018 It is not a production forest. It was a state nature reserve forest though originally not a natural one. These are only partly Elm trees, the Elm fungus is endemic throughout the country, and these trees were not as heavily infested by far as many others that are not being cut down. In fact, over the years I did not even see a branch succumb. Nor are they sparing other species. The raptors have gone, the deer have disappeared. The Owl trees have been cut down. The paths have been turned into muddy swamps. Heck, they even destroyed the Waterlily ponds with their heavy machinery. The problem is that the Forestry Department was hit by budget cuts and now they are farming out maintenance by tender. The cheapest tender gets the job and tries to make as much money as possible out of it, with predictable results.
