Visiting Rome for a week my first stop was Leica Store Rome to trade-in my M10 for an M10-P. Following are first impressions of shooting 3000 images walking all around Rome.

The highlight of the M10-P is of course the shutter sound. It’s quiet and damped and has a lovely sweet sound. I love it. My sample has a quieter sound than the demo unit in the store, but surprisingly, my son can consistently hear the shutter from 8 meters away.

Following are differences I noticed between my M10 and M10-P. I suspect these are all due to sample variation and not design changes - my M10 was an early sample manufactured on December 24, 2016.

- ISO button is easier to lift.

- Shutter release button seems a little smoother to press.

- Shutter speed dial A position has a more definite feel. On the M10 I sometimes couldn’t detect by feel when A is reached.

- Framelines seem dimmer on the M10-P. There were certain lighting conditions where I had to hunt for the 28mm framelines, especially against white walls.

- The LV button is accidentally pressed more often than on my M10 as the camera bounces on the small of my back. I wish there was a setting to turn off the LV button altogether as I never use it and still my LV turns on accidentally a few times a day. I hate it.

- Image quality seems slightly better. I suspect it’s probably the superior light I had in Rome :)

Finally, the camera froze a couple of times. Both times there was an image displayed on the LCD even though my image review setting is off, so the Play button must have been accidentally pressed. When the camera freezes it continues to take pictures normally but those are not written to the card. I lost a few images this way. Turning off the camera unfreezes it. Never had this problem with my M10 in 20 months of using it.

I’m not sure the cost justifies the “upgrade” because it’s essentially the same camera. Personally I prefer the P models appearance (no red logo and elegant top script), and the quieter shutter appealed to me. I certainly noticed that on the street fewer people noticed my clicks at the 1 to 3 meter ranges I operate so that to me was a worthy upgrade.

oh, oh... sounds like a lot of imagination.

It's a nice update to the already amazing M10. The M10P is definitely the best digital Leica I've owned. The shutter is fantastic and the touch screen is surprisingly responsive and useful.

Easy.

EVF/Display Control > LV Screen Target > LV disbaled

This will turn off the LV button completely.

Thanks! I almost never look at the back of the camera anyway. But does the EVF still work when the LV screen is turned off?

Well, I suppose I could just try.

...it's weird but I have exactly same experiences. There are definitely some subtle improvements over M10.

Subtle improvements are not uncommon with upgrades, sensor replacements and repairs

I traded in the M10 for an M10-P. Initially, I thought the shutter sound is way too silent. One can barely hear it even standing next to the camera. But one learns to appreciate it when shooting in a church, a museum, or a theater. It appears odd, but the shutter is so sound-damped that it gives one the illusion that one can shoot at a slower shutter speed handheld with less vibration. That’s how it felt today when I went out to ‘expose for highlights.” 😀

I also love the touchscreen because it allows for almost instantaneous review of the focus point by double tapping on the display when it goes into auto review immediately after a picture has been taken. I know that chimping isn’t always appropriate depending on what one is shooting. See here: https://www.google.de/amp/erickimphotography.com/blog/2011/10/24/10-reasons-why-you-should-never-chimp-while-shooting-street-photography/amp/ But I find it very helpful when the DOF is very shallow. One can get confirmation quickly that an image is sharp where it’s supposed to be and move on.

I also like the spirit level. Image quality, obviously, is exactly the same. ISO dial as ‘easy’ to lift as on the M10.

I got a really good deal as I traded in a 90 Summicron-M that I had bought at a large discount, as well. Well worth it for me.
