Guest Posted September 9, 2018 Share #10 Â Posted September 9, 2018 Some more meat..airlines won't let you check in a laptop or camera batteries or chargers.......all that adds up to a PITA Neil
djmay Posted September 9, 2018 Share #11 Â Posted September 9, 2018 Batteries cannot be checked, however I have had no problem to check my spare chargers. I carry on primary chargers in the backpack with the essentials (cameras, Lenses, etc.). Â Jesse

I tried this experiment too, many years ago. Once and never again. Don't worry, as soon as you pass Customs in Dar, there will be people helping you schlepp your stuff. Make sure that you have one dollar bills to tip.  BTW, what have you taken for the long lens stuff? I felt limited by the 500 on 645, and the 2x converter made it really hard to stabilize.   Some more meat..airlines won't let you check in a laptop or camera batteries or chargers.......all that adds up to a PITANeil  Hand luggage only for batteries and laptops : From the KLM website:  Lithium batteries can generate a great amount of heat if short circuited, or may catch fire if damaged, improperly designed or improperly assembled. Therefore, loose lithium batteries and power banks for personal use in devices such as laptops, mobile phones and DVD players, and for medical equipment is restricted and may only be carried in hand baggage. Each spare battery must be packed separately in the original packaging. If you no longer have this packaging, you must cover the battery contact points with non-conductive tape to insulate them and pack each battery in a separate plastic bag.  And why not? Do you really want to be without them on a Safari should your luggage go missing?
Guest Posted September 9, 2018 Share #14 Â Posted September 9, 2018 Â Â Â Â BTW, what have you taken for the long lens stuff? I felt limited by the 500 on 645, and the 2x converter made it really hard to stabilize. Â Â Â Â ? Jaapv my longest lens is the HC300 about 200mm equivalent in 135 terms......I have a 1.7 TC but don't plan to use it as I will loose AF with it.......my thinking is I have 400mm as I can do a 100% crop and still have a 50 megabytes file......I might have that bit wrong but it is what it is.To be honest I really dont care to much about the photography side of it I just want to go and enjoy the seanery with my own two eyes rather than seeing Tanzania through a viewfinder like the last time I was on safari. I'm also lugging a 150/600 Samsung lens for the tour guide as I bought it for him in KL so that he could save a few Bob. Neil
Guest Posted September 9, 2018 Share #15 Â Posted September 9, 2018 I'm worried about the flight from DAR to Kilimanjaro as my back pack weights 15 kg (camera gear). I have a suitcase that weights maybe 10 kg and a small bag with laptop and batteries. On the Emirates flight no problems with having 2 X hand luggage but I might have to put the safari jacket on with the batteries in that and put the lap top in the back pack and hope they don't weight it.......ideas????? jaapv Posted September 9, 2018 Share #17  Posted September 9, 2018 Yep - no birds or small animals then, and long-distance shots are usually cr@p anyway. Concentrate on animals and environment, the most interesting part .  I like Precision Air Did you book a luggage seat? You're surely over 15 Kg... Jeff S Posted September 9, 2018 Share #18 Â Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) To be honest I really dont care to much about the photography side of it I just want to go and enjoy the seanery with my own two eyes rather than seeing Tanzania through a viewfinder like the last time I was on safari. Â Understandable philosophy, but seemingly incongruous with lugging a massive amount of photo gear, which presumably you packed and weighed to test in advance. Maybe you let the new toy override the goal? Â Regardless, it should be a fun time. Â Jeff Edited September 9, 2018 by Jeff S
