Sigma is due to release its EF to L mount adapter in December https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1463159-REG/sigma_sigma_mc_21_mount_converter_lens.html

… but will it AF any better / quicker than the Novoflex EF to SL smart adapter?  There's a Sigma L mount 70mm macro listed on the road map but that's too short for 'in the field' AF macro of moving insects.

dunk

Yep... looking forward to someone making the next lens that drags me back into the deep end of macro. The game hasn't moved on much since John Shaw's books for SLR style cameras at least.

You talking about the MC-21 adapter, where sigma said it does not work with Leica bodies.

At the time of the initial announcmenet Sigma said the adapter would work with 'any L-mount camera body.' Sigma is now saying that the MC-21 won't work with existing Leica L-mount camera bodies due to 'specifications [that] have changed.'

Looks like there are a few bugs to iron out yet.

I did find a used Leica 90 Summicron-SL f/2.0 at my favourite dealer. They may have the macro adapter as well but won't be able to drive there for a few more weeks. This will only yield 1:2 macro ratio, but I get a close focusing setup and a 90mm lens for portraits. Win - Win.

Has anyone used this combo before ?

I really don't want to get the 90mm Elmar f/4.0, to me not fast enough for portraits and yes I like bokeh.

No macro adapter for the SL 90, but there is one for Leica M, http://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/Technical-Equipment/Adapter/Macro-adapter-M

Strange it was there yesterday !

Duly re-attached.

If it fails to open up, let me have your e-mail address and I'll send a few full res ones over on WeTransfer - I also have the 50mm Zeiss Makro Planar if you want any images sent across at the same time.

I continue to hope that Leica will design and release a native SL macro lens, because given the jawdropping quality of their recent full-frame L-mount offerings – see, for example, how much better the L-mount 50 APO Summicron is than the M-mount one, even though I hardly expected that to be possible – I expect it would be a stunner.

In the meantime, though, I continue to get results I like a lot from the 100mm APO-Macro-Elmarit-R.  I knew I should keep my R glass!

Most of the photos in this album are taken with the 100mm R APO, on an M240 or more recently an SL2:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jbm0/albums/72157710728550542

The 100 R APO gives consistently pleasing results, but when faced with the completely unfair test of the SL2's sensor-shift resolution doubling mode... yes, the details do begin to fall apart.

I'm also not convinced that this lens performs as well in the 1:2 to 1:1 range with the Elpro affixed as it does at 1:2 and below without the Elpro.

Another lens I'm very interested in and will probably try soon is the Venus Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, which goes to 2:1 magnification and has recently become available in L-mount.  It's not from Leica... but it is a modern design from a maker with a specialty in macro lenses.  I look forward to seeing if the pictures from it please my eye.

Today I received my L Mount Venus Laowa 100mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO.  At both very close and very far distances, It is sharp with great detail & rich color.  For the low price it is outstanding.  I have an APO SL 35, an APO SL 90, & the APO SL 90 to 280. As a result, I expect a lot from a lens. Not sure how this lens could have been produced anywhere near at its price level and achieve the Images it made.  Suggest you try one before they sell out.

That's very encouraging!  I'd already ordered mine, and should get it tomorrow – I'm looking forward to trying it out!

I was tempted by this this lens, but the following two points gave me pause

* they will ship the lens out of Hong Kong but in a way that attempts to evade taxes: “there is a chance that the customs will impose duty/VAT/GST when the parcel is shipped from foreign countries to your country. Of course, there is a chance that you wont get taxed either. Venus Optics will NOT take any responsibility on the extra fees arisen and will NOT accept refund/return of your order.  Please check with the custom department in your country before making a purchase. Please note that we, by default, declared the parcel as $100 (or lower) if there is no special requirement received.”

* there is a reason that it ships with a filter https://www.shutterbug.com/content/laowa-100mm-f28-2x-ultra-macro-apo-lens-review

The lack of stabilisation really is disturbing for use on the SL or on the CL. On the SL there are other alternatives too, i,e,  the Canon Macro lenses with the Sigma MC 21. I used these with my SL before i have changed it to my present SL2. They work very fine with both. CL is another story, it is not possible to use these lenses because the CL does not accept the MC 21 - which is really a shame. So I bought the Leica L Macro 60 mm - a very good lens but again without stabilsation. And for some of my purposes I would need a longer focal length. I could achieve the last point with the new Sigma and it is said, that the converters should work together with this lens. I own both the 1,4 and the 2.0 fpr the Sigma 100 - 400 and I hope these are the right ones. So I have not made up my mind, if I will buy this lens or not. If it had a stabilisation, I would buy it immediately for the CL.

The SL2 has stabilization, so there it is an advantage that the lens has no OIS (smaller and less expensive - only about 700$ ). Probably all future cameras will include it (at least most).

Now I prefer lenses without OIS, with the only exception of very long teles.

@jeff_moore I checked out your Flickr album of the time pieces and wanted to say nice work!

Oh, thanks!

...and now that album has some photos with Laowa and Sigma macro lenses as well.  The EXIF info should tell which are which – with a lack of lens data signifying the Laowa

Sigma macro art 105 L mount with  1:1 mag.  The sl2 has image stabilization   leica doesn't have a good full frame 42mp option.   The s lens is huge and expensive, 90 macro is 1:2, and the tl 60mm will crop down to 24mp.
