Howard, actually the talk with the Leica mechanic about quality control was told to me by Holger. I also talked to him, but mostly about other things.

Carsten--

Thanks for the correction.

I've misquoted you in a couple other threads, so if you see me apparently repeating the error, don't bother to correct me. I won't do it again.

Holger--

Now you're on the spot for my misquotations! :)

Howard,

I don’t have something official to say about Leica’s quality control. However, having sent first my Tele-Elmar and later my M8 to Solms I again made the experience that in too many cases you get your gear back without that they solved the issue.

In the case of the Tele-Elmar especially I had to make a graet effort to convince the technician that the image I had sent him as an example was just not sharp. He argued that this would not be the sharpest lens anyway ... blabla. This lead my once again to a conclusion concerning technicians I made often in my life:

If you show something that is obviously not o.k. to a technician, and if he is not able te detect the mistake with his test procedures - then he just is unable to believe you...

In the case of my M8 which was not able to produce any sharp image with a wide open lens I also got it back without that anything had changed.

This lead me then to the discussion with the Leica guy saying that I could not imagine that all these cases from which I knew from the forum could be due to dumb or drunken ;) people in Solms and that therefore I would assume that Leica must have a problem with their test procedures which were probably not layed out for the much narrower tolerances of the digital era.

He agreed to me that this might be the case and planned to route my well documented case to QS to evaluate further.

As a bottom line I want to encourage all of you: Yes, it is possible to get a M8 body that is capable to make very sharp images, lens open, any distance!

Best

Holger

Maybe the M9 will have to be auto-focus with a motorised sensor platform like the Contax AX had for getting auto-focus on a film SLR with manual focus lenses .

Just joking - I think but maybe an ultra fine final auto adjust option could work.
