I don't understand the exposure clipping menu and the numerical upper and lower limit settings. Please help. Thank you.

Histogram is form 0 to 255 right, so you tell the camera which shows clipping above and below certain numbers, say show clipping below 5 and above 250

In the menu you can choose the values which show you over- and underexposure on the display („clipping“). The indication for clipping is just a warning, showing overexposed parts in red and underexposed parts in blue. It does not change your files.

 

The limits are 0 for underexposure and 255 for overexposure. Your file will be o.k. showing no clipping warnings as long as the light does not go beyond the limits. If it does you get burned out highlights and/or black with no details.

 

You can set the limits a little bit tighter, so you get the warning earlier. I choose 2 for lower and 253 for upper limit.

So even if I get some „clipping warnings“ in some details I can live with it, as the Raw-files are more resistant to clipping and I may restore the details by reducing highlights or brightening shadows. If you choose less, say 20 and 235 you will be warned even if there is no risk.

 

But you can also switch off the clipping warnings and live with your exposure without any warnings.
