Does anybody know how to distinguish them apart if the firmware has been upgraded? We used to be able to know this sort of thing from the serial number of the body. Shootist Posted July 10, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2007 The big difference is the second Gen have the hardware fix don't at time of manufacturing. All M8's made from about December 2006 till now are second Gen units, unless Leica has made other changes to the electronics since the original hardware fix and those would be 3rd Gen units. The first M8 I had, bought January 24 2007 with serial # 3100977, had the filter info included in the box. It was clearly a early unit that I suspect went back to solms for the hardware fix before it ever made it to a dealer shelf. My first unit was replaced for a new unit because of some irregularities with the sensor and the outter shell/body. At that time I decided to buy a second M8. The replacement unit came from Leica NJ and has a serial of 3108xxx and the second unit I bought from B&H is 3195xxx. Both those these are second Gen's.
