ArtZ Posted July 10, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, After hesitating for a while between an Elmerit 21 f/2.8 and the WATE, I've just bought the WATE an hour ago. The problem now is that it's impossible to find in Paris the E67 IR/UV filter and the filter adapter. I spoke with the manager of "La Maison du Leica" (just around the corner) who is a good friend and was expecting today lots of M8, lenses, filters... Everything was there except WATEs and IR UV filters I called all Leica dealers and everybody said nobody has seen in Paris (for the moment) the E67 filter with the adapter for the WATE... (same for filter E55 -which I need for my APO ASPH 90 f/2) So here's my question: Can I live without it? Any suggestion?
Advertisement Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Hi ArtZ, Take a look here WATE & IR/UV filters. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
kidigital Posted July 10, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2007 Manuel, There is a more elegant solution available with an adapter that John Milich has developed for the WATE. If you search "milich WATE" you should find the relevant thread. I hope this helps. I have one as do quite a few others here and highly recommend it for use on the WATE. carstenw Posted July 10, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 10, 2007 I second Kurt's answer. I have the WATE and the Milich adapter, and it is infinitely more elegant than Leica's solution. The hood fits on the Milich adapter, but with Leica's solution, it is either-or. You need a Leica 49mm IR filter for the Milich adapter. I think John Milich's username is jlm... ArtZ Posted July 10, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted July 10, 2007 Kurt, Carsten, Thanks for your answers.I have sent an email to John Milich (jm@milich.com) but I couldn't find any image of the adaptor here. I tried John Milich Web site but it seems to be down for the moment. I would appreciate if you can post here a couple of pictures of the adaptor. I think it's possible to get here the E49 IR/UV filter.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 10, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 10, 2007 You can search on my name but that would be a lot of threads. Might try WATE.. But there are about 3 threads that talk and show extensively on the adapter. Also buy a 49 leica filter now and only a leica 49mm IR one. You will see why after you read the threads

Paul_S Posted July 10, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I saw a picture of John Milich's WATE adapter in the German M8 forum: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-m8/23392-m8-und-wate-mit-uv-ir-2.html#post257067
carstenw Posted July 10, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 10, 2007 Here are two pictures. It doesn't look like much, just a ring between the lens and the hood. Perfect. Welcome, dear visitor! ArtZ Posted July 10, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted July 10, 2007 Thank you, Carsten! I've seen finally the picture in the German forum and I have already ordered it to John Milich. It should arrive in 4-5 days by DHL. The only thing I was wondering is there's no vigneting at 16mm due to the distance increase between the lens and the hood. I guess if you can use WATE on film cameras, with FOV crop 1.33x should be OK. Mit freundlichem Gruß Manuel
carstenw Posted July 10, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 10, 2007 With the WATE and the filter on film there might be vignetting, but then you don't need the filter on film. There is no vignetting on the M8.
Olsen Posted July 10, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 10, 2007 Kurt, Carsten, Thanks for your answers.I have sent an email to John Milich (jm@milich.com) but I couldn't find any image of the adaptor here. I think it's possible to get here the E49 IR/UV filter. I am suprised that Paris is not a big enough metropolis to harbour a original WATE filter holder. They have it here in Oslo, up in the far north. i bought mine in Singapore. Delivery time should be less than a week if you ordered one. A link here shows the two solutions: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-m8/23392-m8-und-wate-mit-uv-ir-2.html
Zachary Posted July 11, 2007 Share #12 Posted July 11, 2007 I have just received the Wate Adapter for the Leica 16 18 21 lens. I also have the 49mm B&W IR filter. How do I remove the glass from the filter . I do not have the Microtool that Mr. Milich recommends. thanks Mitch

How do I remove the glass from the filter . I do not have the Microtool that Mr. Milich recommends. thanks Mitch The Leica filter will be a better match for that lens (given the M8's firmware corrections). I'd recommend using that instead. It uses a simple wire clip to hold the glass in so removal is fairly easy. Cheers, Sean
ArtZ Posted July 11, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted July 11, 2007 I am suprised that Paris is not a big enough metropolis to harbour a original WATE filter holder. They have it here in Oslo, up in the far north. i bought mine in Singapore. Delivery time should be less than a week if you ordered one. Eh oui, Olsen, French people are very good to tell others what they have to do... but for other things they're no so good :-) The biggest Leica shop in France, "La Maison du Leica", is 100 meters from my appartment on a big boulevard called "Beaumarchais" where there're another two Leica shops. None of them have the filters, nor the adapter. I called another two shops: one near the Champs Elysées and the other near the Eiffel tower... Same answer. I wanted to get also an E55 IR/UV filter, but they're not available in shops yet (same for the E67). I think I got yesterday the only WATE kit available in Paris. Everybody is waiting for them. They think that, like every year, Leica will send lots of staff before Solms factory close for vacation. As I'm on holidays after July 20th and going on a speleological expedition the first week in August and I would like to take my M8, I ordered John Milich's WATE adapter. It should arrive in 4-5 days. Thank you John if you're reading! Today I will try to get a 49 mm glass for the adapter. So if you come to Paris on vacation, just enjoy the city and the "always polite" french people (especially bartenders)... but don't expect find any rare M8 gear here ;-) Cheers, mate.
