Image Print is printing heaven!

I have been printing digitally for about 10 years, now, and have just finished working with my first set of prints that used Image Print.

Several people told me about this software and although I was put off by the price, I can say it is *definitely * worth it. Every print comes of the printer looking exactly like it did on the screen. Thie is a NEW experience for me.

Based on the amount of paper I typically waste in tuning prints, this product should pay for itself in about a year. But that's not the point, what's happened is that the prints are now correct (based on the doofus' view of the screen).

So far this year, I have been blown away by:

1. The M8

2. All the support available on this forum

3. the 24mm lens -- it doesn't get any better than this

4. Image Print

I am looking forward to starting to work with the Pictorico white film product.

As an addition, I was driving home from work last nite and thinking how amazing this forum is both from the point of view of the useful contributions, news, and assistance, but also because Leica hosts it and even takes punches.

Regards to all,

Regards to all,

Pictorico High gloss white film is my personal favorite. Truly white whites and truly black blacks and crispness throughout. I think you'll like it. By the way, if I keep my monitor calibrated and use the Epson R2400 high gloss profile printing out of CS3, my system is WYSIWYG. The trick is always let PS manage color output. the only exception is for dye sub printers like my little Selphy where the printer needs to control itself.. I'd be interested to know how Image Print would work and whether it would improve things. I AM always tempted but also don't want to fix things that aren't broken.

'Fraid they don't Bill. Leica pulled the plug on their support a while ago.

What printer are you using the image print software with?

Steve, Leica isn't paying the bills any more?

I am using an Epson 2400 and am very pleased with it now that I have this program. I have been using Ilford glossy paper for a while and the profile from their web site does not work well enough withs this printer (in this case, for portraits).

Their profiles worked ok with the 2200 I had (dying a slow death) but not with this 2400.

What's really neat about the Image Print stuff is that you specify the lighting in the display location for the print (fluorescent, daylight, and so on).

i have ImagePrint and am using an epson 2200. i agree the difference with using the RIP software vs. epson driver (even with custom ICC profiles) is night and day.

ImagePrint seems to be using a much better algorithm which results in sharper, smoother toned prints.

i have not tried the Pictorico high gloss film before. how long is the paper rated to last?

i saw the review on Luminous-Landscape but it is rather old.....

thanks,

andy

This is high praise, indeed, imho.

A question: From their web site it looks like there is a dongle involved with Image Print. Dongles in the past have caused me grief, so I am cautious, to say the least. I have no recent experience because I avoid them most diligently. Any problems with the dongle for anyone?

Maybe the high price includes making sure the dongle does not itself cause problems by careful (therefore costly) development and testing.

Craig, I've always hated dongles but have never had a problem with the IP dongle since I first bought the program a few years ago. I don't think the dongle is off-the-shelf code from another software developer. The high price is because IP is a niche market prodcut for a fairly small market. Should sound faimiliar ont he Leica Users Forum.

There is a users group here (of which I'm a moderator):

Craig, no problem with the dongle and it is currently in a (powered) external usb hub. It is required to be present both for the install and general operation (and it is NOT replaceable).

As to the question regarding Pictorico, as I recall it's got a 100-year estimated life (behind whatever or put away). That is extended by spray which I will also work with. I have a can of Premier Art spray but haven't started using it.

I'm still only half way thru the documentation and still need to learn how to use thick media under IP control.

This is encouraging about the dongle.

From my history with them, the fact that the IP dongle works in a usb hub seems like a miracle. My sad experience from the early days of PCs, when trying to make something work for someone who was paying me to do that, was that if something could go wrong it would go wrong, dongles especially.

Given the proclivity of many to just appropriate software without buying it, I understand why software companies are driven to things like dongles. I also remember, specifically, from the early versions of 1-2-3 that copy protection's shortcomings (no dongle) were enough to drive me to unprotected Quattro just to get a working program.

Once the product is known to work as designed, then the question becomes for each prospective user whether it is worth the asking price. The last x% of anything, including as noted Leica stuff, is always expensive. Image Print may be something that also is worth it.

I hope there will be further reports here since I value everything posted here, with exceptions too minimal to note.

Hello Bill, could you confirm that you are using the Epson Stylus Photo R2400 printer with Image Print?? I am just looking through a demo version of the program at the moment and find that under -color management-profiles-printer/paper the only choice is Adobe RGB 1998. Is this correct? Thanks......

There are profiles for the 3800 and all the other Epson printers. When you go to the site you can see some of the features, but the profiles are in an FTP site that they supply software to access.

I am using the 2400 and there are several input profiles, including the Adobe 1998.

Not sure what you are referring to with Adobe 1998 as an input profile. The profile setup in IP is simple: in the case of color prints, for input you can set it up to accept the profile that is embedded in the image file and also the profile to apply if the image is not tagged with a profile. For output you select the profile for the printer/paper that you are using.

For B&W there are several ways of working, which are explained in the following note
