abrewer Posted July 10, 2018 Share #3 Posted July 10, 2018 Delightful images all. Not sure how far you are from Wiliamstown but a visit to the Clark Museum is well worth the time when visiting the Berkshires. It is a little-known gem whose collection rivals the Kimball in Ft Worth, the Barnes here in Philly, and the Getty in Los Angeles.

sblitz Posted July 12, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted July 12, 2018 Delightful images all. Not sure how far you are from Wiliamstown but a visit to the Clark Museum is well worth the time when visiting the Berkshires. It is a little-known gem whose collection rivals the Kimball in Ft Worth, the Barnes here in Philly, and the Getty in Los Angeles. Didn't get to visit this time, but it is a wonderful museum. Prefer the collection to the Getty (not the building or grounds) -- never been to the Kimball or Barnes. Not sure if you know the story, but the original benefactor of the museum built it there to house his collection where it would be safe from nuclear attack on the US. It is about 45 minutes or so from Lenox to Willamstown, very pretty ride. Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.

stuny Posted July 12, 2018 Share #7 Posted July 12, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I too find the Getty collection to be underwhelming. That's the first place I'd ever seen an ugly Renoir, as though the museum hierarchy needed a Renoir and could only get that one. The Barnes has dozens of beautiful Renoirs, and plenty more, too.

Yes, but they do have Irises, which is spectacular in person. And the grounds are unique and fascinating, like stepping back into mythical antiquity. My gripe with the Barnes is the common one: in adhering to the terms of the will, the pictures are jammed/crammed/slammed together in a distracting mish-mash. I just want to take some of the more precious paintings down and put them on a blank wall where they have some breathing room.
