Mature Male Emperor Dragonfly … Leica SL / Novoflex 600mm plus Leitz APO 2x extender … … photo taken at a distance of approx. 4m

The battle scarred wings remind me of a well used, i.e. brassy, black paint M3. The insect flies frequent sorties to defend its territory against intruders and repeatedly returns to the same pond-side perch.

I live in hope that Leica will one day introduce e.g. an SL 560mm lens and matched extender … but until they do there are plenty of viable manual focus alternatives. In the 1960s Novoflex follow focus lenses were standard equipment for press photographers at cricket matches and with modern adapters are still capable of giving current state of the art fast AF telephotos a run for their money. The Novoflex 600mm was purchased for £69 from Ffordes four years ago
