Photoskeptic Posted June 24, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been in negotiations to buy an M9-P chrome, serial #3980325. This serial # doesn't seem to jive with known M9-P numbers. M9-P is stamped on the hotshoe and the sealed tag on the bottom plate also has M9-P on it. Is it genuine or an updated M9? Thanks for all replies, John

Photoskeptic Posted June 24, 2018 Author Share #2 Posted June 24, 2018 I think I've answered my own question in that it does appear to be an udgraded M9. How much does anyone feel this should impact the asking price?
silverchrome Posted June 26, 2018 Share #3 Posted June 26, 2018 (edited) Unless Leica did it as a one off, an upgraded M9 should not have M9-P stamped on the hotshoe. Upgraded M9s should have their original hotshoe, which is transfered onto the new top plate during the upgrade. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than £200 extra for a 'real' M9-P. That would apply to an upgraded M9 as well provided all the paperwork is there. I recently bought a near mint low mileage M9-P from a dealer, complete with warranty, for just over 2K. I guess at that price, it won't have had it's sensor replaced? Edited June 27, 2018 by jvansmit
silverchrome Posted June 27, 2018 Share #5 Posted June 27, 2018 I guess at that price, it won't have had it's sensor replaced? Sensor replaced. Confirmed by Leica and the included documentation! It's the "corrosion free" sensor as well. I wouldn't touch an M9 that has not had its sensor replaced unless it was heavily discounted to cover the cost of sensor failure and the hassle involved with getting the sensor changed. Most private sales of M9s, especially on ebay, are ridiculously priced. The same model can usually be had from a dealer at a lower price with a warranty. Graham (G4FUJ) Posted June 27, 2018 Share #6 Posted June 27, 2018 Many things on eBay are ridiculously priced compared to dealer / direct purchase. For example a Nitecore ULM9 USB charger (for M8 / M9 batteries) is over £10 cheaper direct from the UK importers than one on eBay.
Phil_P Posted June 27, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 27, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) In Switzerland going rate seems to be a 50% premium for the M9-P over the M9 (having in the past few months bought one of each from a well respected dealership here, mintish with new sensors.) Yes online auctions seem to chance it asking for more.... one for an M9 offered at a premium above dealership price said "The previous owner has confirmed to me that the sensor has probably been replaced." 'Confirmed' and 'probably' not a great mix and on checking the visible serial number it had in fact been replaced with the old sensor so that has put me off buying a body online! On posting this fact to the seller as a question he did revise the offer accordingly to his due! Edited June 27, 2018 by Phil_P

Topsy Posted June 28, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 28, 2018 I found my 3 M9s within the last 12 months on eBay all with documented sensor replacements cheapest was £1850, most Expensive £2400 but that one was a real minter not a mark on it. I was happy with the price of each given they all have new sensors.
Photoskeptic Posted June 28, 2018 Author Share #10 Posted June 28, 2018 FYI, Leica confirms it is an early M9-P. It's for sale on the getDPI forum, if anyone is interested.
