Still a beautiful ship.

When the Queen Mary was decommissioned, her new owners secured her by bidding just a bit above the scrap value. These days she is used as a hotel.

A passing fire engine gives a good sense of the size of the ship.

My grandfather ran a freight forwarding service in New York; into the 1960s luxury liners like the Queen Mary would take some freight between Europe and the US. When I was a child, my grandfather would take me to the docks to see some of the ships being loaded and to occasionally board them. While I went on many freighters in port, the best trips included a visit to an ocean liner.

I had my one visit to the RMS Queen Mary in 1962-63 (my best guess - I was around 8 years old). One of the officers gave me a small model of the ship (sadly it was lost when my dad sold the family home.) The other memorable ships I was able to board were the RMS Queen Elizabeth, the SS United States, as well as the NS Savannah (the first nuclear-powered cargo ship.) Sadly I never took a trip on any of them (and have little ambition to on today's mega-floating hotels - too many people for my taste!)
