Digilux 2 connection problem

For some reason my computers suddenly do not recognise my D2 when I connect it; I'm getting a "New hardware found" message and then "USB device not recognised". It may be that I've inadvertently changed one of the menu settings but I can't see what.

 

I did put a 2Gb memory card in and I'm wondering if that was a good idea; the images have recorded OK and when I transferred the card to my V-Lux, they downloaded automatically to PSE4.

 

Any idea how I can reset my D2? I can't find a "restore factory settings" menu.

On the DMR, you get a choice of whether the camera is recognised as a disk device or a camera. Maybe it's the same with the Digilux.

 

Why not just transfer the images using your card reader?

It's always been recognised as Leica Digilux 2 before.

 

I don't use a card reader, I just plug the mini USB straight into the D2 and V-Lux, what is the advantage of a reader?

 

Never had this trouble with my Speed Graphic.

You should use a card reader.

 

It saves a lot of wear and tear on the socket on the camera - mucho spondulicks to fix THAT problem!

Pete, if you use a usb-2 card reader the file transfer is about 10 times faster. I was amazed after getting a reader.

 

I recommend the Sandisk ImageMate x-in-1 (I have the 12-in-1 but others have recommended the 5-in-1). It was $40, I think. This also saves wear and tear on the usb connector in the cameras.

It's probably not the card. My Digilux 2 works fine with cards thru 2GB, though it is incompatible with larger ones.

 

I don't know what caused the difficulty, but as Andy surmised, the Digilux 2 has a choice of being seen as a disk drive or as a camera.

 

There's no 'restore factory defaults' so far as I know, but do check the instruction manual for proper file transfer settings. Some versions of Windows require a particular setting (disk or camera) in the camera menu, while others will work with either.

 

I agree with both Bill and Andy that it's definitely better (easier, quicker, less chance of damage, more consistent among various cameras) to do it all from a card reader.

 

At least you were able to get the files downloaded!

I reinforce Howard's and Bill's comments: I use a Sandisk 2GB Extreme 111 card and a card reader with no priblems. Except my speeling.

Thanks for the sage advice guys, Sandisk ImageMate 12 in 1 ordered via Amazon 13.25GBP.

 

I'm still puzzled why both my computers should suddenly refuse to recognise "the device" i.e. the D2 not the card. There seem to be three USB connection options in the D2 menues: Mass storage (USB Direct-Print, PTP (Pict Bridge) and a symbol which shows a camera wired to a computer; this last option is the one I always used. None of these choices are now recognised by my PCs.

 

I'll struggle my way through the manual again and see if there is anything i've missed.

I agree that using a cardreader is a better option.

 

But even then the PC Autoplay options may change - sometimes mysteriously.

 

Check the Windows Properties and change the Autoplay default. If this does not work, there is a free MS "Powertoy" called "Teak UI" that allows for an easy change.

Sorted! I found the reset factory settings, its on Page 169!!! In the set-up menu there is a "reset" option.

Tried the connection and instead of the three option I referred to above a symbol which looks like a sideways "Z" with an arrowhead on each end appears on the rear screen.

 

Anyway, should have the card reader in a couple of days.

Now I need to remember that there *IS* a reset function!
