I heared the M-D version is

Just wondered if anyone heard anything about the 262

It would be interesting if it is as it would mean another "lite" M digital edition on the way

Good question, Colonel.

A light M10 with aluminum top and bottom plate should weight about 550 grams.

Such an M10 would be the very perfect one I am waiting for.

I see Tamarkin dropped new prices on M262’s back to $5,295 after initially raising them a third time since introduction with the latest increases. $5,295 is only $100 over initial intro price.

Glad I have the one I purchased, but like all M240 variants I’m pretty sure it’s done as a currenly produced body. That’s ok. It was made to last a good long while. Between it and my MP240 I’m pretty set for a while.

Both Adorama and B&H cut the price down to 4.995.
Generally speaking, a steep price cut is the “notice to the public” that a model is set to be discontinued
The question is wether Leica will replace it with either a stripped off M10 or an upgraded Q with interchangeable M lenses.
Both solutions are feasible and rather natural evolutions of two very good products.

Edit:

I checked the websites of a couple of European Leica sellers

It seems that no new M262 are available.

This new is a bit disheartening, if true. I have been a long time Leica film camera owner/user and never thought I could move to a Leica digital M camera because of cost. Earlier this year I came into my grand father’s oil money, not a lot but enough, that allowed me to buy a Leica MType 262. As are all my Leica cameras, it is a thing of beautiful manufacture. But at $5k I cannot afford to think of it as a throw away camera like I do with Canon dslr cameras that go out of date like every 18 months. I was hoping the Type 262 would be good for years like my Leica film cameras. Is Leica building planned-obselecense digital M cameras @ $5k to $7k a pop? If so, that will end my relationship with anything Leica digital.

As a side note, I have Canon D30 (not 30D), the original Canon 3mp digital SLR that sold for $3k when it first came out back in 01. I bought it in like new condition in 05 for $200. It still works great. Will my $5k Leica Type 262 be that reliable 17 years later?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Don

The fact that it is discontinued or not does not change your camera at all. I still use my 2009 M9 almost daily at it has been discontinued for years.

The problem for Leica is that they are victims of their own reputation "a Leica is a camera for life"... but of course there are also those users who want, want, need, want a new version every year or so. You camera may not have all the fancy (and IMHO mostly useless) bells and whistles of the latest M, but it will still take the same quality photographs as the day you bought it. It should last you for years.

Why would you think the camera is a throw away just because Leica doesn't make them any more?   If you didn't have one and wanted one I can see being disappointed.   But you have your 262 (and I have mine).   There are those who still enjoy using their original M8, a camera that hasn't been made in 10 years.  I see my M262 lasting at least that long.  But then I don't throw away my Canon DSLRs, either.   I'm still using the 7D I purchased in '09.    I also have an early Digital Rebel although I haven't used it in quite a while.

Thank you. I am not one of those that wants wants wants the latest. Just want a camera I can depend on for years to come. The Type 262 is everything I wanted in a Leica digital M. I just hope they continue to support it. Images are incredible as is the build of the camera. I hope I didn’t misrepesent my desire for a long lasting digital Leica M. I have so many years and much money invested in the Leica LTM, M, and SLR systems. I just don’t want to be disappointed in their digital M system. I have high hopes now that I finally have a digital M. It was so long a dream but out of reach for me until of late.

Thank you for your feedback,

Don

Didn’t say I thought they were throw always, rather was stating I hope they don’t treat them as such. And Canon dslrs are not throw always either, otherwise I would not hang onto a 17 year old Canon D30 dslr 3mp camera that still takes great pics within its limits. The throw away was a metaphor for how some manufactures, like Canon, no longer support their not so old cameras. Canon will not service my D30 nor even my 60D, which is not all that old. That is what I mean as “throw away.” If one can’t get the manufacturer to service a camera, they have thrown it away.

Thanks,

Don
