Good place to buy an M8 in the US?

I just joined this forum since I am seriously considering purchse of an M8. I have posed this question on another forum and was underwhelmed by the response so I will ask it here. Where is a good place to buy an M8 on line? I am well aware of the BIG GUYs on the east coast lke BH and Adorama and have spent lots of money with them but I would just as soon make this purchse elsewhere. Buying locally is not a good option for me so on-line is going to be the choice. Suggestions appreciated.

Looks to me like this will be a worthwhile place to get some of the answers I know will be needed to help me through the initial slope of the learning curve.

Thanks for any assistance. John

John,

First, make sure they are a Authorized Leica Dealership. Second, make sure, upfront, that they will be there over the long haul to support you. Asked about their return policy before making any purchase.

I bought two M8s back in November. Both had issues out-of-the-box. One failed to write out to the memory card. The other exhibited a pronounced thin white vertical line running down the left side of any images shot above ISO 320.

Unfortunately, the “Authorized Leica Dealer” admittedly refused return. However, Robert Fisk, at Leica Camera Inc., in Allendale, NJ, replaced the totally non-functional camera on the spot. The other, I let Leica handle under warranty, which I just received back the other week.

Since the initial mishap with my previous dealer, I have established a fantastic long-term relationship with popflash.photo based on honesty, followup, professional handling of returns and shared insights and knowledge. Tony Rose, the propriety, has personally called me directly many times to followup on orders placed online.

Back in 1990 Guy Kawasaki wrote a book titled “The Macintosh Way.” Many excellent examples are provided throughout the book about doing “the right thing the right way” in terms running a business and providing customer support.

popflash.photo definitely mirrors this simple but often neglected philosophy.

My dealers are Popflash, Camera west and Dale labs. They are all great and will go to the wall with you. They get all my leica business and i recommend them always to folks.

I can highly recommend David at Dale Labs (http://www.dalelabs.com). Although his website doesn't show it, he is an authorized Leica dealer. He is very knowledgable and helpful - not to mention a great photographer himself. I got to know him on the Leica Acadame trip to Germany and he will be the first one I call in the future. I bought a WATE from him at the end of the trip and I know he will get some more of my money.

Tamarkin in NYC right off Union Square has M8's in stock

Fogg Camera Bags

they are also one of the few places that carry Fogg bags & have an excellent selection of used equipment

I found them very helpful answering some arcane questions I had about an old lens

the bulk of their business is mail order but it is a fun store to visit (take an elevator to the 19th floor) ...they have a fascinating display of Leica historical items in a small alcove

Here's my list:

Tony Rose

Adorama and B&H

Camera West

Dale

Ritz's Collectibles (Phoenix, mostly legacy gear but they've got an M8 on the block in their online catalog now)

There's a useful index of dealers maintained at Photo.net that I always check before I buy:

Camera Shops - photo.net

Thanks.

Call Bob at Bergen County Camera in Westwood, NJ.

They are located about 10 minutes from Leica in Allendale, NJ and have a very close personal relationship there.

I've been buying there for 25 years. Outstanding Service, outstanding knowledge.

I recommend them highly.

Just a observation reading this thread and i think we should all be a little grateful to the many highly recommended leica dealers we are all talking about. You don't see these kinds of recommendations with other camera's because there all over the place and common but specialty camera's like Leica that only go to authorized dealers it's nice to see all these great dealers out there. Honestly i never been treated any better in my years than when i switched to leica and the folks that are recommended here. Most of them really bend over backwards to help you.
