So this happened recently with my MM1 after returning from Wetzlar to have the corroded sensor swap :

turn camera on & press shutter > "Attention - shutter fault" warning dialogue > camera locks up > turn off camera & switch it back on again > camera works flawlessly.

After turning camera off for an extended period, situation repeats over.

I'm reluctant to go through the whole process of returning it because it works & of course, lovely new sensor but away it must! Eventually anyways..

Send them an email for advice and, if return is not necessary, don’t throw the reply away but store it carefully.

Maybe the battery ?

End-of-life or nearly battery can be the cause: not enough power to drive the shutter.

Very excited to report that this was the issue! All my batteries are very old & have been recharged many times. It has taken me three weeks to source a new M8 battery so my apologies for the delay in responding but now no need to return the camera to Wetzlar. Thank you, a.noctilux :) :) :)
