Tethering: do I need LR plug in and Leica Image Shuttle

I've never tethered before but use LR for my image processing and have several questions on how to set up.

 

1.  is the LR tethered plug in all that I need or is Leica Image shuttle also needed?

2.  I have to dig up the packaging for the SL but what sort of connection is on the SL?  Is it USB micro B male on the camera end and USB A male type on the computer end?

3.  What is the limit, if any, on the length of the USB cable?

- I haven't used the LR plug-in, just LIS. I normally just use it to bring the files into a watched folder on the computer, from which LR imports them automatically.

- The SL uses a mini-USB-3.0 connector, it's female on the body. That usually connects to the flat USB A type connector (also USB 3 rated, but one of the older types). 

- The supplied cable is 1.1m long. I wouldn't go more than 3m, personally, as I've had signal degradation issues with longer cables than that with various other devices.

Thanks Ramarren.  So does Leica Image Shuttle allow import of the photos directly into a folder on any computer and lets you see the RAW files in a preview?  That would be better as I could use any laptop for the photoshoot to tether the camera  and then transfer the files to my main computer which has LR.

The files I move are RAW or JPEG+RAW ... I can view them in macOS without any additional software so I have never bothered to really figure out whether LIS supports browsing.

 

Of course, best thing to do is to register your SL and get LIS from the Leica website, just try it out. It doesn't cost anything. I have the macOS version; I'm pretty sure an up to date Windows version is also available.

I installed LIS on my MacBook Pro and the images end up on the computer.  Under finder, the pics end up under "Images" in the Finder window but I can't seem to specify a folder where they can be directed to.

Another issue I'd like to correct is after I take a picture under LIS, the window returns to live view.  Is there a way to "freeze" the window to the picture taken and then update to the next picture/shutter release.  I don't want a live view as I'd like to have the last picture taken stay on the screen until the next shutter release.
