@mmradman, I have 2 35mm Summilux (pre-asph and FLE) and a "slow" 28mm (old Summaron) - I use them with my M6/MP and 240MP. Of course I appreciate the speed and/or DOF with the Lux but I also appreciate the size and slow pace of the Summaron. I never crop my 28mm images to 35mm (or different) - I take the 28mm for the angle of view.

I agree with IkarusJohn - different lenses for different purposes. But I alway miss something :)

If I crop 28mm image I do it to either achieve desired framing or to tidy the image margins not to deliberately achieve 35mm field of view. If I am to shoot with 35mm you may say I crop it to 50mm and so on. Edited by mmradman

If you're a confirmed 28mm shooter, then the Summilux should delight you (also if the size/weight/cost doesn't put you off). It's truly excellent.

Of the 3 wider Summilux lenses the 28 is probably the 'best' one; the 24 is the least convincing.

That said, I'm not really a 28mm rangefinder person; I like 28mm and especially 24mm much more on SLR/EVF cameras, so I only have the 'lesser' Summicron 28 which I'm quite satisfied with for occasional use. My main fast set are the 21, 35, 50 and 75 Summilux(es) and the 21 Summilux is a wonderful complement to the SEM and WATE.

I would appreciate you expanding on your approach of complementary use of Summilux 21mm with SEM and WATE.

I use Summilux 21, SEM and Biogon-C 4.5/21 for colour and B&W [sL601 and M246], sort of sitting on the fence with regard to WATE.

I love the lens but HATE the lens hood. Makes the lens feel so much bigger.  Also the fact that they don't come with the outer thread protection ring (like on the 35 FLE) means you pretty much have to use the hood 100% of the time. Also on older M digital body the 28mm frameline is nonexistent for glass wearers, another annoyance.

On a side note, the 28mm in the M Limited Edition set has a better design lens hood (IMO). Too bad it costs $80k.

One more, M240, Summilux 28mm at max aperture. To avoid motion blur shutter speed is 1/125 and ISO is at high value for M240, I usually shot in Auto Exposure and Auto ISO mode with shutter speed limit set at 4*focal length setting.

Summicron would probably cope in such poor light, Elmarit and Summaron would struggle.

Beautiful photo and good example of using 28mm wide open. In similar wide open shots from 35 or 50 lux, the background people will become unrecognizable. For me 28mm wide open (I use cron but can see how lux is rendering) is just perfect. Goldilocks perfect. :)

Edit: Another advantage of 28mm (vs 35/50) is that you can handhold almost a stop slower. Of course for people motion you may need faster (as is case here for couple dancing) but for most situations, shooting at 1/15 is possible with steady hands.

I absolutely love the 28mm Lux, and no regrets whatsoever even though it was a struggle financially. It's an outstanding lens, and has become the standard lens on my M9M after previously using the 24mm Lux which is a little soft by comparison. I like the size too.

The 28 Lux is a wonderful lens, mind you I think that this is.a very strong FoV for Leica and the alternatives are great too.

With the Lux you get an extra stop but also a gorgeous bright rendering

Cons are obviously extra price, bulk and weight - mine reaches 470 grams with hood and both caps

A second, lighter medium WA should be considered if going for the Lux (thus adding to the overall cost consideration)

I do not want to open a single thread for my question.
I think the Milvus 1.4/25 could be a nice slightly cheaper alternative for summilux 28 or 24.
Has anybody experience with the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/25mm on the SL? How is its behavior on the SL?
thank you

Someone wrote the 24 Lux would be the least convincing. While 28 is really awesome. For me 24 brings out that extra of dynamic and paired with 35 and 50 it´s my fav three lens setup. 4mm are a lot in the wide angle area.

I am on the fence with the 28 LUX at this moment. I sold the V2 28 Cron to fund this lens. The wider aperture doesn't matter for me with the M10 but the size does matter.

I am either going to sell the 28 Lux and buy back the V2 Cron and add the 28 Summaron.

Or, option 2 I am going to keep the Lux and buy the 28 Summaron.
