M10, M240 or Something Else?

I just ordered a mint MP240 from Classic Connection.  It will be in El Paso about the middle of next week.  So, should I keep three film Leica's:  M2, M5 and R6.2?  So many decisions but I guess that is what these forums are good for.

Good choice of MP240. What are the others worth? Are they worth selling? Would they be missed?

Well, I don't do much at all with the Leica R6.2 but compared to Leica M cameras, they go for peanuts.  Both the M2 and M5 were purchased about the same time from Sherry Krauter and are in outstanding condition.  I still enjoy using both and honestly I don't know which one I would sell.  I have owned five or six M2's over the years (it is the film Leica I keep coming back to).  This is the first M5 I have owned and I am beginning to believe it's ergonomics really does make it the best shooter of all the Leica M models.

 

It would be a tough decision and either body is worth about $1000 so not breaking the bank by keeping them both.

 

And the Leica curse got me back in 1975 when I traded all my Nikon F gear from newspaper photography for a Leica CL and a couple lenses.  I don't think I have ever been without at least one Leica since then.

Congratulation on your MP240 purchase!

I have owned a M240, a R5, and a couple of Leica lenses.

For your MP240, I would recommend a Leica hand grip (non-GPS).

I have found that M240 raw files' shadow can be recovered much better than Canon CR2 or Nikon NEF raw files.

I have also owned a Canon system (1DM3 + 400mm f/2.8L II USM) and a Nikon system (D700 + 80-400mm), and I use these systems for surfing and birding photography.  For all other photography needs besides surfing and birding, I use my M240 system.

I can get an M240 for about $3000 while a new M10 is more then double that. I don't think I do enough photography to justify the M10 and don't want to eat the depreciation. A new Fuji X100F is $1300. The main advantage to a digital M is using my M mount lenses but the 35mm focal length is my favorite and of course the X100F has a great equivalent. My photography these days is mainly family and travel.

 

As I review what I have written, it seems the Fuji X100F is the logical choice but I look forward to reading your comments.

If you like film better then digital the M240 or M10 will not change that.

 

Well done for getting the 240. In terms of $ value the M 240 is the best M ever IMHO. Rock solid, reliable, beautiful, great sensor and best battery life of any digital M

The M10 has a better ISO sensor, WiFi and looses a few mm but is the same weight

 

In terms of the X100F, been there done that. Lens is soft wide open, at infinity and close up. IMHO Fuji really should upgrade it.

The x-t20 with a 23mm f2 is much sharper and pretty much the same size give or take a few mm here or there

 

It’s really whether and how much you want Leica MF and FF. that should be the real determinant.

 

I use Fuji for AF work and 240 for most of everything else

To be honest I would use Sony A7Rii or iii for AF work but I have to keep the overall kit cost acceptable

Fuji still has the best jpgs of any camera and the best skin tones.

Main difference with Leica is it’s just not as sharp or punchy or beautiful.

I have 2 M240's, one ex-demo, one certified pre-owned.  Together at the time (couple years ago, about) cost me about 1.5x of one new one.  The depreciation is killer for me, but buying demo/used is the way I can stay in the system.  Nothing about the M10 is seducing me, but if my M240's become problematic I'm sure used M10's will be available in the future for half of new price.  

 

For film bodies, I owned pretty much all of them at one time or another, but the ones I kept were my original 2 M4's.  They're not pretty enough to attract collectors, and have sentimental value.  Both were CLA'd a few years ago, so if the desire to mess with film again happens to strike, they're ready.
