Edber Posted January 3, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 3, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Guys, I hope I'm not being blasphemous by mentioning a non-Leica lens here but I'm curious if anyone has tried the 50mm 1.1 7Artisans lens with the Leica M-T adapter for the T/TL/TL2. I've been thinking of getting one but in it's photos, the rear element it seems a bit long so I'm not sure if will fit for the T (in the same way that the rear element of the Leica 21mm f/4 Super-Angulon is also to long for the T) At $370 this lens is just so damn cheap for 1.1 that I'm curious as to how it would perform as a portrait lens at 75mm (with crop factor). I already have the TL 35mm f/1.4 which I absolutely ADORE but I would like something a little longer in my collection. Welcome, dear visitor! ropo54 Posted January 3, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 3, 2018 You might check the M lens forum as there is a thread there with photos and comments about the 7Artisans 1.1. Perhaps also contact Arvin Lee who's really had some nice experience with his 7Artisans. Rob
oldwino Posted January 3, 2018 Share #3 Posted January 3, 2018 I don't think it will fit. You might want to look at the new Voigtlander 40/1.2 instead. Though it costs considerably more, it will work fine on the T series.
arvin Posted January 4, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Hi Edber, I have asked the official 7artisans technical engineer regarding 50/1.1 on TL/TL2/CL. According to them, it can be used on TL/TL2/CL. However, you will need to let them know the model of your camera, so they can mill off a little of the middle for allow focus at infinity. I will attach a photo of mine lens tonight. The photo below is the lens without any modification. Edited January 4, 2018 by arvin

arvin Posted January 4, 2018 Share #6 Posted January 4, 2018 That’s pretty great that they will work to make the lens fit. Yeah, they modified mine 50/1.1 and it’s been working nicely with my SL. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
arvin Posted January 4, 2018 Share #7 Posted January 4, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Attached my 50/1.1 lens. Now I know what they had done. [emoji16] I don’t have a TL / TL2 / CL to test and I doubt if Leica Shop will allow me to try it on in the shop despite I am actually going there tomorrow morning. But it works beautifully on my SL. Hope this had helped you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
hifly Posted January 4, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) I am using the lens on my T and it could not focus to infinity because of the long rear element. I filled down carefully a bit of the metal from the lens myself and works great now focusing to infinity. Even better if they can do it at the factory as it seems. Here's a few photos with it: Edited January 4, 2018 by hifly

arvin Posted January 4, 2018 Share #11 Posted January 4, 2018 I just added some to my post and here's a few more (all at f/1.1) They seem quite blurry while viewing them on my phone. Perhaps it’s compressed when you uploaded it? I will check again using my computer later. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

But happy to hear they are willing to do it(!). Thank you for looking into this!

arvin Posted January 5, 2018 Share #15 Posted January 5, 2018 Fantastic! I bought mine from Taobao.com, it’s like the Chinese version of amazon, sorta. 7artisans has a online store there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Here's a few photos with it: Great shots! Gives me a lot of hope for the quality of this lens on the T! I still can't believe how cheap this lens is to get that tremendous bokeh and speed! If ever, I might have to be milling it myself as I'm based in the Philippines and I don't trust the postal system to receive camera gear. There is a new local distributer for 7Artisans but they don't carry the 50mm 1.1 (they focus is for the non-leica cameras) If ever, I'll probably end up getting it in Hong Kong. Did you just mill off the extreme rear so that it would fit in the camera?
hifly Posted January 5, 2018 Share #17 Posted January 5, 2018 Yeah, I just milled from the top and bottom when the focus is on infinity. As a tool I used a flat knife sharpener which I had in hand. I covered the back glass with multiple layers of tape not to damage it. And actuallly covered other parts of the lens also to handle dust.

gbealnz Posted January 6, 2018 Share #19 Posted January 6, 2018 I bought one of these new recently, from the company, via e bay. It would not fit my SL. I also tried it on my TL which I have for sale, just in case there was a difference in the mounts. It wouldn't fit that either. The company offered to mill the rear cell to allow the lens to fit the SL/TL line and I sent it back. I guess if you own one and then buy the camera, or buy a used one and find it won't fit, then by all means adapt it yourself. But if buying new, simply ask for it to be done prior to shipping, the company was excellent and most accommodating. Gary
rmow Posted August 9, 2018 Share #20 Posted August 9, 2018 Would anyone know if there is anyone inAustralia who would mill the lens for me. I purchased it from o/seas not realising it would not fit onto my CL using the adapter? I'm a little hesitant to do it myself, though as a last option will do so.
