Yet another Ebay scam alert

Beware of Ebay. A search using "Leica" and "M8" and filtering to cameras turns up the page linked below. If it is still there the "Leica M8 Digital Camera" listing starting at $1750 actually links to a fake site where there is a buy it now option. This is where the thief steals yet another innocent Ebay username and password to do their dirtywork. Do NOT try to buy this and enter your information! I feel sorry for the the guy that probably got his login information stolen. But the real shocker for me is that the genuine Ebay site contains this link to a phishing fake site! I"ve alerted Ebay but am not to confident that they care enough to act quickly. Be very careful even on Ebay that aparently can contain links to counterfeit sites!!

Here is another scam also aimed at stealing Ebay username and passworkd. After having sold 2 items on Ebay, I got a message that I could join the powerseller club. While I knew that this could not be true, out of curiosity I went to to link in the email. The site looked like the Ebay login site asking for user name and password, but it was obvious from the URL that it was not Ebay.

BTW, I gave up notifying Ebay of these things after having reported several fake "second chance" offers without getting any reaction from Ebay.

On the other hand, if someone reacts to a buy now offer for a new M8 for 1,750 USD, he probaly deserves to be punished. There is nothing like a free M8. If anything, this case confirms that one should never loose common sense, in particular not on Ebay.

In general I am not a fan of government intervention but given the size and internationality of eBay and its cynical, irresponsible business ethics - make money at all times and s** the poor punter, I can see no other way to bring them to heel. A joint action by the US Treasury department and the EU might help. It is now one of the world's largest businesses and it is behaving with the arrogance of a 19th century oil baron.

Like Wilson I think the real problem is the company itself rather than the scammers that frequent it. I recently inadvertently purchased counterfeit memory cards from a 10,000+ feedback seller. eBay / Pay-pal were just not interested. I wonder why ? $$$$$$$$$$$$$

I am always suspicious of high volume eBay sellers. What is it they are selling? It isn't 1k+ items that is for sure so when they are offering 1K+ items I get suspicious. I would rather buy from someone that has sold 10-20 items and I see a mix of real items including some expensive ones with positive feedback. More likely a real seller like you or me trying to unload one item to buy another.

I gave up on buying leica gear on e-bay completely , there are better places

I think it is OK when it is big companies like PhotoArsenal, Photo Huppert and lots of the larger Japanese and Hong Kong shops using it as a marketing tool to reach customers in other countries. I have bought over the last 8 months new Zeiss Biogons 21 and 35 and an Elmar-M 50, an Elmarit-M 90 (second hand). I am currently buying a Voigtlander Nokton 35/1.2 from Foto-Mundus. I have been able to find a choice of B+W 52mm 486 filters on eBay that in hours of phoning round French shops today, I failed to find. I think it is OK if you pick and choose but when it goes wrong, notwithstanding the huge fees that eBay make, you are on your own. New stuff is easier than second-hand. There are people I would trust for S/H stuff, like Thomas Merkt but there are an awful lot more people who I would not trust, including one of the large NY-US dealers.

If you are careful, eBay can be OK. I recently picked up a 90mm Macro Elmar from Southeastern Camera - a reputable seller -- via eBay, and I have picked up lots of things like lebns caps and even lens hoods there as well. You do need to be careful, and if its a crazy low price, stay away from it.

I noticed the BIN M8 listing Saturday evening (US eastern time) not too long after it was posted. By last night (Sunday) around 9 p.m. it was gone.

Not a bad response time by eBay, imho, but caveat emptor is still useful in approaching eBay.
