Here’s a soft focus rendition using two soft focus filters and a black mist 1/4 on a 50mm, no CS.

Has anyone tried faking the thambar effect using a Summicron 90mm f2 with a soft focus filter and a centre spot of masking tape applied?
No? Well I will be doing so shortly.

The disadvantage is, that you get nothing sharp or nearly sharp, like the Thambar is able to,  when you use soft focus filters. Everything in the picture remains blurry. I don't think, that a centre spot filter would make much difference. Also you won't get the Thambar bokeh and blurriness, the bokeh bubbles or anything else, which changes continuously between f/2,2 and f/6,3 on the Thambar.

Well, there was a bit of a mess up in that the sender didn’t pay the correct postage. The soft focus filter should arrive this Friday, all being well.
How big is the centre spot, I need to cut a circle of masking tape?

I used the e49 version to measure. About 12mm.

You can also try the CS filter without the soft filters: it will only block the central part which is where lenses are typically the sharpest, could be interesting, especially on older lenses....

Thanks for sharing! This has a similar vibe but as mentioned by @Wonzo, you may get close to the fully open look but it may be hard to get the kind of sharp/soft look that the  Thambar also delivers (no idea what the technical term is). In any case, very interested to see how it goes!

No matter how much time and money is spent on stockings, vaseline, filters, etc. the best and only way to get the Thambar rendering on an M is, not surprisingly, to use a Thambar. I wish I could get a wide angle to render as the Thambar does but it’s not going to happen.

Anyone knows where to find a copy of the reissued Chamber. It seems to be available nowhere...

I assume you meant reissued Thambar (autocorrect...)

Apparently it has been out of production for some time even if it is still listed on Leica's page. I couldn't find any remaining stock having searched many stores in France and Europe. Finally found a like new copy on eBay. You can try checking eBay or online resellers, some units in great condition should appear from time to time...

Yes... did not see it.

Could a moderator correct this?

Having tested the 90mm f2 with a soft focus filter with an opaque 12mm centre spot the results in no way approach the Thambar. £3 odd down the drain.

I won’t embarrass myself by posting the resulting images.

I'm curious to know what effect there was, if any. The point of the Thambar spot filter is that it eliminates the soft focus central portion, and exposes you to the ultra soft edges.

Does the 90 f2 have noticeably different edges?

Since you are curious I will post a couple of images tomorrow. But I must mention that they are test images and in no way artistic. Normally they would be deposited in the bin, and smartly so!
