Missed focus but hey ho, just a wee sparrow!

Excellent. It is a challenge which is partly why I like it so much. I usually focus the spotting scope first. Very precisely. Then AF will work on the Q. I also often just go to MF and select closest focus. Checking with focus peaking will help. I try and keep the shutter speed pretty high. Say 1/1000. You’re shooting with the equivalent of a 1000 mm lens. Any movement is greatly magnified as blur. Shoot wide open aperture. Keep the images coming. We are on to something as far as expanding the envelope of normal Q / Q2 usage. 👏👏

I'm getting more and more interested into digiscoping but the cost of getting started is a bit prohibitive... are there any affordable alternatives to the Leica / Swarovski scopes which still deliver an acceptable quality?

I do believe that ultimately you get what you pay for. However, knowing that, I suspect many of the much less expensive spotting scopes for instance from Bushnell would work well enough. It would get you started. One challenge is the adapter for the Q that perfectly fits the Leica and almost perfectly fits my Swarovski. You’d be wise to get the adapter and then look for a scope that would work well enough. Alternatively, you can try holding the camera up against the scope eyepiece. It’s more challenging, but I’ve definitely done it successfully.

Shoot with the aperture at f/1.7. Wide open and try both manual and auto focus. Keep your shutter speed up to near 1/1000. The magnification of a spotting scope even at 20X is equivalent to shooting with a 1000mm lens. Tough to keep steady. Tripods help.

Scopes needen't cost a fortune, a well used televid and eyepiece (forget the zoom!) is relatively cheap, certainly sub 500 euros  (apo ones a bit more) but if you are just wanting to try it out, have you any binoculars??   or there are some bargain used japanese scopes like nikon, kowa etc     I use an old apotelevid 77 with a 32 x eyepiece...I'm still waiting for leica to deliver my digiscoping adapter so currently just hold my Q2 to the eyepiece....surprisingly effective!

Thanks guys; I'm hopeful to get my hands on a used adapter for a very reasonable price; so will probably wait to see if they are happy with my offer...

Once I've got my hands on that, I will be back for further advise....

Comet Neowise. I tried really hard to photograph the comet using my Q2 with the Swarovski spotting scope. I also used a Sky Watcher Star tracker to allow a bit longer shutter opening. This is my best so far. 8 sec. f/1.8, ISO 1600. 20X power on the spotting scope. The focus is soft. Was it sharp, the stars would be more visible

I see that the Leica Digiscoping Adapter for Leica Q (Typ 116) is discontinued. What is the plan for using a Q2 for digiscoping? Am I limited to used equipment then?

Your guess is as good as mine. I bought the Digiscoping adapter for my Q. It works equally well on the Q2. I’ve never heard why it was discontinued. I’d guess low volume of sales.

I’d keep an eye on eBay as well as checking with Leica dealers for a used one. In the US, Leica Miami would be a good choice.

There aren’t many people who use the Q with a spotting scope. I find it a fun challenge.

Good luck.

I haven't been able to find a Q Digiscoping adapter on the web for several weeks.  I did recently see availability for a Leica X1 Digiscoping adapter.  SKU 42333      CID 153516.

The description is a bit vague but I believe the X1 has a 49mm thread to attach the adapter.   The picture of the adapter looks very similar but is stamped X1 instead of Q.

Is this likely to work with the Q/Q2 ?

It looks like it might work, but I cannot be sure. If you’re in the US, I’d call Leica Miami. They have one for sale and they are very friendly and helpful.

The puzzling thing to me is the 49mm threads. That would imply it screws into the filter threads on the camera. First, you’d have to find an adapter to make the threads “male” instead of “female” . My threads are approx 59mm and the adapter fits on to the threads for the hood.

I would talk with a Leica dealer and see if they can be on the lookout for one for you. Weird to me that Leica stopped selling them although one can suspect they are a very low volume item.

Good luck.

I just looked. Leica Store Australia says they have one in stock. Worth sending them a question.

I spoke to Leica in Miami.  They were very helpful.  They said the Leica X DIgiscoping adaptor will Not function with the Q line of cameras.

I could really do with a trip to Australia.  I have never been.

Good. Keep looking. I will keep my eye out as well and if I see one, I’ll message you.

Australia is a wonderful place to visit except in the wildfire season. We were there about 5 years ago. Planning to go back in the future.

I would send a message to the Leica Australia store and see if they still have the adapter and what the cost to shop would be. It might be worth it. They’re pretty hard to find now.
