Slightly OT: Does Mac have a Future?

The iPhone at least gives Mac users a choice of smartphone. Up until now, it has either been Treos or Blackberrys (with a clunky interface plus the additional Blackberry contract to pay for). I have used Treos for years but boy are they stuffed full of irritating features. Every model (600, 650, 680, 700 and 750) has a different button layout for no good reason I can see. Versamail is feeble. Internet browsing is an "emergencies only" facility. I have just bought another 680 for my French mobile account to replace my elderly and dying 600 and the battery life when you have bluetooth on, which is all the time in my case, is pathetic. If the iPhone had been available in Europe, I think I might have bought one - maybe next year. The only thing that has little interest for me would be the built in iPod bit. If you already have an iPod like me, an 80GB one I generally leave in the car connected to the car radio, you have the problem of synching two different iPod devices to different libraries.

You can feed as many iPods as you like from one mother iTunes library, but connecting one iPod to multiple libraries isn't allowed.

However, there is an application called Senuti (available via Versiontracker) which might be of some assistance to you.

I have a Blackberry and it's one of the worst user interfaces I have ever used. The designers clearly didn't go to "intuition" school.

Andy,

I will have a look at Senuti. The iTunes - iPod interface is getting more dictatorial with each iteration. It is now close to impossible to charge my iPod from my iBook, which does not have my full 48GB music library on it, as it would take up about 60% of the iBook hard disc, even with my new, nominally 100GB hard disc in the iBook. You used to be able to start up iTunes in a no synch mode (press CMD when starting) but I don't seem to be able to do it now. If you hold CMD when plugging in an iPod, it asks you which library you want to synch to but does not offer the option of no synch. I now have a charger dock, which also plugs into my hi-fi and the iLink cable on the Becker Grand Prix radio, charges it in the car. If I get an iPhone, I will often want to charge it from my iBook but will not want to synch - that may be difficult. Also I don't have any music libraries as small as 4GB. Having heard your comment on Blackberrys, makes me even more glad I did not go the Blackberry route, which would have been much easier, as Orange no longer does Treos and I had to change to Vodaphone to get a replacement Treo. At least Palm Desktop software, although not quite as good as the Windoze version, is perfectly acceptable.

It's right on the initial iTunes page for the device. Manually Manage Music and Videos. Alternatively, don't tick the manage box on each of the tabs. If you choose Manually manage music and videos, just don't select any of the playlist/song options to sync with.

Eric,

I assumed that unticking the manage box on each tab would do the trick but the last time I tried it, it wiped my iPod clean.

It seems to work on my nano. I have the summary page ticked to manage manually and nothing for sync music on the music tab and it doesn't wipe the mini and doesn't try to move the music.

Eric,

I will have another go this afternoon on my iBook. If it wipes, no great tragedy, as my full music and spoken e-book library is on my iMac and I will re-synch.
