Leica Community,

I have recently bought a Leica R3 Safari and have been experiencing issues loading the film. The camera advances perfectly and is completely functional. I have lost 2 rolls of film after shooting a whole roll and I believe the cause is the way I have been loading the film. It seems that once I have gotten the initial tooth of the spool correctly loaded, the film does not continue to sit flush. Is this normal? Do you guys have any tips on loading film into your R3s? Please see the attached photos with descriptions.

If you look at the first picture the first tooth of the spool sits correctly. Looking at the second picture you can see that after advancing the film there is space between the tooth and the perforations. As I continue to advance the film I can feel tension in the lever and the perforations continue to not sit flush with the teeth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also have a video but the file is too big to upload.

Thanks!

I think you just need to make sure the film has no slack as it crosses tghe sprocket. Before closing the back of the camera, tighten the film with the rewind knob so there is no slack. Hopefully that will resolve your issue. It is a terrific camera....I actually liked it better than my R8, except that the R8 had a variable diopter.
