Advertisement (gone after registration)

The photographer who prefers the 35mm format and wants AF will not consider M lenses.  

 

+1.  I am not sure why so many people on this forum fail to understand this.

The quote was in response to me saying the body weight of the SL is not the driving factor in overall system weight, it’s the lenses. For small weight use M lenses.

 

It’s not lack of understanding, it’s a direct response to someone who values the available smaller lenses and currently uses them. It’s also an acknowledgement that if you value lighter weight and AF, the SL system is a pretty poor choice because of the lenses available.

 

I wrote this in response to dvareika who wrote about “the vast array of lenses that can be used” including M lenses. Quote from dvareika is below.

 

“What I love

- No names in buttons except on/off

- Programability

- The quick frequent upgrades in OS

- The viewfinder resolution and dynamic range

- The vast array of lenses one can use although I have only four lenses (3 are Ms)”

My post was more written in response to some of the comments in the "New Leica SL Lenses & Roadmap" thread.  I just thought the words from wildlightphoto within this context were spot on.

I was in a Leica store just the other day and I asked this very question.  He responded by saying "the SL is perfect, there is nothing to improve". HAHA, ok...

by the way does anyone know what the bitrate recording in 10 bit to an external recorder is?  Has that been improved in any of the fw updates?

That will depend on your recorder, and specifically on which version of ProRes, or DnXHR, or other CODEC, it uses. The camera itself has an HDMI 1.4 output, at 10-bit, 4:2:2, DCI 4K.

 

For instance, the ProRes specification lists four 4:2:2 formats: 422 HQ, 422, 422 LT, and 422 Proxy. The target data rates for DCI 4K 30fps in ProRes vary from 943 Mb/s (422 HQ) down to 194 Mb/s (422 Proxy).

HDMI 1.4 itself handles up-to 8.16 Gbit/s, but that's in a different format. Any camera that outputs 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 will send the same amount of data down an HDMI cable.
