On my way to the hardware store this morning. This is why I never go anywhere without my camera next to me.

What is amazing about this picture is not how close they let me get (in my car), but rather that they were within

5 yards of one of the busiest roads in the community. M10 with 90 cron apo.

Thank you. They are all over this area. I have heard from DNR friends of mine that they are a tremendous wildlife management success story.

Until the 1940s they were nearly extinct in Michigan due to hunting and dramatic changes in land use. The Michigan DNR entered into an exchange

program with the DNR of Missouri. We gave them breeding pairs of Whitetail deer and they gave us breeding pairs of turkeys. The birds were

released in a controlled wildlife preserve called Rose Lake (about 10 miles from my home). As they bred, the young were gradually spread out to

other safe areas. By the 1990s there were tens of thousands of them all over the state (and sometimes in my backyard and I live in a suburb).
