kenw Posted September 7, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had recently bought a brand new Summilux 28mm and realize the aperture ring has a bit of play back and forth. I wouldn't consider the rotation of the ring as too loose but the tiny wiggling of the ring is kind of annoying. My 50 Lux ASPH. doesn't show such behavior. Wonder whether this is normal to this lens? other 28 Lux owners experiencing the same?

FrozenInTime Posted September 7, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2017 Does not sound right : I have been using the same 28 and 50mm Summilux combination a lot over the last few weeks and did not notice the aperture feeling any different between them or from other Leica M lenses
Mike51 Posted September 7, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 7, 2017 My 28mm Summilux doesn't exhibit that behavior. It's been my most used lens over the last year.
dkmoore Posted September 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted September 8, 2017 This "behavior" is somewhat common with the 35 Lux FLE and I have experienced this with other lenses as well. If you don't notice the aperture changes inadvertently while walking around there is nothing to worry about.
kenw Posted September 9, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted September 9, 2017 Thank you all for replying to my question. A follow up to this issue: As I live in Tokyo, Leica Japan wants me to bring in the lens for inspection. It turns out that the ring behavior was somewhat unique to the copy I own ( they show me another new 28 lux in the store and found a similiar behavior but my copy was way looser compare to the one they showed me in turns of the wiggling and mine goes beyond the f1.4 and f16 mark and stuck in that position while the one in store doesn't go beyond at all). I also found another issue today which the ring was stiffer between f5.6 and f8 and the technician admits that this problem is truly unique to my lens. They offer a free repair which could be done in Leica Japan for about a week. It's the sixth day since I bought the lens new from an official Leica dealer here in Tokyo. Still within the possible return period. Considering the business culture here in Japan, my hope for getting a refund for the lens is tiny but maybe worth a try? Would you return the lens or send it in for repair if you are in a similar situation?
mdemeyer Posted September 9, 2017 Share #6 Posted September 9, 2017 Seems like a small adjustment. I would have them do it.
anickpick Posted September 9, 2017 Share #7 Posted September 9, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) If I were in your position, I would go to my dealer and agree to send the lens in. I'd be fine if I got the lens back one or two weeks later in perfect condition. Otherwise I would insist on a replacement.
