I received my 21 ASPH, back from coding, this afternoon, and couldn't resist the temptation to make a face to face with the old Super Angulons; so tonight I arranged a sort of still life, just to see the three at work; ok, the ASPH is clearly better , but what really struck me was the strong difference in the global color cast : I shot in exactly the same condition (artificial light, no filter) : only, I set lens recognition ON for the Elmarit Asph: can be this the reason for such a difference ? The effect of cyan drift adjustment ?

BTW, the most evident difference is in vignetting : here are the pics:

First, the Elmarit Asph,at f8..

The Super Angulon 3,4, f8

And the old Super Angulon f4, it too at f8

Shooting at f4 (f 5,6 for the oldest of the trio... f4 is wide open...maybe too much for it) and cropping, seems to me that SA 3,4 is not so worst than the ASPH in definition, while the oldest is surely a bit under :

I'm rather satisfied...of course I'll use the new asph, but love a lot my old SAs and, of course, the f4 is a Screw Mount + factory BM adapter (there is an incredibly small screw to secure it to the body), so when I'd like to use the old IIIf. Apart vignetting, they seem to be still excellent lenses (I never made such tests on film..simply used them), and, BTW, I tried the correction of vignetting in Lightroom: maybe a little semplicistic function, but surely a good grade of correction is achieved : I did not apply it in the posted pics: all are from 160 ASA DNG with absolutely no Post Processing.

Comments are welcome.

Hi Luigi

Interesting comparison. Ths sharpness of SA3.4 really holds up. I got the feeling that the asph pics looks apparently sharper due to its higher edge contrast.

Re the color cast, it seems that M8 in fact do quite some IR/vignetting color correction even when we turn the len detection to on.

Would you try some comparsion pics in BW? I guess the beautiful 3D and grey tones rendition will show up.

Cheers

Matthew

  • 2 months later...

I have an old 3.4 that was for a leica standard with the mirror up. I also have a R to M adapter and have used it on my M7. I noticed that part of the rear element is manufactured with a portion cut away. possibly to clear the mirror box? In any case the lens and light meter are very close, -1 stop compensation on the M8. it looks a little big with the SER V111 hood but the pictures are great.
