Beijing: In the Hutong

Id say it is nice to see it is all still there. Might seem a flippant remark but China is a big story huh, you'd need to write an essay to explain just about anything. Ive jsut given up what could have turned into a nine page response:p.

Nice to see a gritty presentation. Always works for me. I still see teh place only in b&w.

too contrasty for my liking, China is a lot mellower, it's important to keep the little details in a shot of this nature

Though a bit too contrasty as Imants writes, I feel it helps enhance the grittiness of the scene. Sadly, the hutong are being razed to make way for modern highrise buildings. You've captured an endangered species.

Looks like (based on my limited read and understanding of the characters) a painting, frame and stamp carving shop. The physical condition of some of these buildings can be "suspect" and pose danger i.e. very poor / substandard electrical wiring and plumbing infrastructure + wall and roof supports have a limit on the weight that can supported. Years ago there were no master plans for the city expansion or building codes. I have seen some areas (in large cities)where the old buildings have been preserved and upgraded to meet codes. Most others are being torn down to make room for high rises + commercial and industrial centers.

I visited with a family there, father is an artist, and they were very comfortable. Shared courtyard and all that. I guess it's all, location, location.....

Stuart,

Inevitable, as the family can only own the home and not the land. Although most people have a 70 year lease, if that means anything.

Yeah,

I think I went a little over the top as far as contrast. it's a new conversion technique I'm experimenting with. But it's miles ahead in the direction I'm trying to go. Cheers!
