This is similar to a post in the dpreview Lica Talk forum

Now that I'm sure my (fixed version) of the TL2 won't freeze on me, I've decided to sell off my X-T2.  Since they are both 24 megapixel APS-C sensors I thought that before I do I'd do a quick-and-dirty comparison of similar images from it and the new Leica TL2.

Images from ISO800 to ISO50000 (25600 for the X-T2 are available at larger size at http://vikasmgore.zenfolio.com/p384066669

It appears that X-T2 colours are a bit cooler and the TL2 overexposes by 1/3 to 2/3 stops.

  • The focus and metering were both set to a single point at the centre of the frame.
  • Each had they standard 15-55 zoom lens mounted and set to 24mm (TL2) and 23mm (X-T2)
  • The aperture was set to maximum
  • Shutter speed was on Auto
  • I did no processing or adjustments to any of the images beyond what Lightroom may have done unknown to me.  They are simple exports to JPG from Lightroom.

The two images below are crops of the central area from the shots at ISO6400.  First Leica TL2 and then Fujifilm X-T2:

I believe the X-T2 tends to underexposed for 1/3-2/3 stop.. and the TL2 does not overexpose? (due to fuji's actual ISO tends to be lower than the rated ISO)

I think you are right that the X-T2 underexposes a bit but in my experience the TL2 does overexpose somewhat.  Between the two it lands up being almost a stop difference.

Haha, yeah, the difference is significant between them, and normally I'll just use -1 EV on my TL2, whereas on my T -2/3 EV was fine

Other than the exposure issues, if you look at the Zenfolio site, it’s clear that the TL2 handles high ISO shots at least a stop or two better than the X-T2. This took me by surprise.

and how to they compare at ISO 100 ?

Haven’t tried it but even at ISO 800 they seem comparable so I should think lower than that they should be as well - other than the differences in colour rendering and exposure.

I also sold off my Fuji as I've been running the T and X-T2 for sometime, then the TL2 arrived I just preferred the images and handling of the TL2. I do think the software also play a part, I found much the same in Lightroom, but import the same files in Photo App and the Fuji is much warmer than the Leica.

Interesting, good to know.

I have done similar to you guys as well, Fuji to T (OK, I admit it, a few T's, and I am seeking counselling fr this, LOL).

The one thing I do miss is the compact/small/light primes, like the XF18/2, and the XF35/2. Even the XF50/2 and the XF14/2.8.

I've banged on about this in the past and been shot down, but if Fuji can do it, then Leica should be able to as well.

The T is a delightful, small, stylish package, and to my mind is not helped by the larger that life 35/1.4 etc.

I let go of my Fuji X-Pro1, X-T1 and X100T after buying the Leica T.

I very honestly still have mixed feelings about it....

The T(L2) has a beautiful design and delivers excellent image quality but Fuji delivers excellent image quality as well, has about 20-30 mostly light (some weather resistant) lenses to choose from and the body is simply more functional.

The Leica lenses are excellent but so are the Fuji lenses IMO and they are 2-3 times cheaper.  I have been thinking of buying an X-T2 only for the 100-400 lens.

And if I had an X-T2 I would have a hard time letting go of that joystick...

If you shoot M-glass or other legacy glass or have a very deliberate mostly manual focusing shooting style in general I would say that the Leica T might be the better body, if you shoot faster paced AF work I would say Fuji might be the better option IMO.

My main regret about letting the Fujis go will be the lenses.  Yes, the Leica lenses do do a superb job and are very well made but the Fuji lenses were very good as well.  Like Gordon I will miss the small primes.  I thought I would also miss the slightly faster speed of the 'kit' zoom but I realize it starts closing down to a smaller aperture fairly fast and the extra ISO range of the TL2 compensates for that.

Thank you for posting these higher ISO photos.  How many stops better would you say the TL2 is compared to the T.  I have the T now and am trying to decide if I want to wait for the TL2 for higher ISO or move on.  I have a Nikon Df that I do not hesitate to leave Auto ISO set at 12800.  On the T, I stop mostly at 1600 and sometimes 3200.

You will find that the images at the Zenfolio site speak for themselves but I thing that the Leica TL2 does at least one stop or more better than the Fujifilm X-T2 and, although I can't compare directly, I would say at least two stops better than the Leica T.  I think 6400 or 12500 should be fine for most purposes.  The attached is crop of a picture taken at ISO12500

Thanks.  That is impressively better than the T.  The blues and greens on the tiles look very rich.  At 12800 it appears to be better than my Nikon Df.  Looks like I may be staying with the TL line for a while longer.  The lenses are all quite impressive.  Even the 18-56mm at f8 beats every zoom I have owned.
