Minimal movement of the Lens

Hi fellow Q user,

I am enjoying my Q since September 2015 and as it is a photographic tool after all it got quite a few dents and marks here and there but it is still working like on the first day. Today I was cleaning the lens when I noticed a noise. After taking a closer look I noticed that the noise comes from the inner front part of the lens (marked with the red circle) which kind of moves when cleaning the lens. It's a really minimal movement, like just a one millimeter or even less... To be honest, I don't know if it was always like that and I just didn't notice or if this is a abnormal behavior...
So I just wanted to ask you guys if you could check your Q and see if it does it too.

I attached a picture so you can see which part of the lens I mean.

Unless I'm misinterpreting your picture and description of the problem, I think you will find that what is loose is a screw thread cover which is removable to allow you to fit the lens shade originally supplied with the camera. If you aren't using the lens shade just finger tighten the cover. I don't think you really have a problem.

Thanks for your reply but you got me wrong :)

The part that moves is the inner front part of the lens, the area with the lens info (within the red circle). As I use the lens shade that came with the Q I take it of every time I want to clean the lens.

Here's a quick video I uploaded in my dropbox so you all can see what I mean :)

Oh an just to be clear, I don't have use any strong force for this to happen...

Ok, I get that.

Mine doesn't move, so if you are concerned, maybe you should have it examined. I've had my Q repaired twice by the London dealer without involving Wetzlar.. I had dust problems on the sensor and inside the viewfinder. Both times, my Leica main dealer in London was able to dismantle the camera without sending it back to the factory and it only took a few days. Call your nearest dealer in Germany and request a prepaid return label. That will enable a courier to collect from your home. After repair, it will be returned to you no charge.

Good luck.

I know the procedure as my Q was already sent back to Wetzlar once because the digital level was not working correctly...

Damn, guess I have to get in contact with the Leica support quick as my Warranty is about to run out in September... I hope they don't give me hard time because of the scratches trying to blame me for it :D

But I would still like to see other peoples statements on this.

I just checked mine, and it does have a very slight amount of movement to it - though much less than 1mm - it almost imperceptible. It's easier to feel it when I have the UV filter on it, and use my fingers on the filter. As a pro, I use it as a tool - used it for 14 months on last year's presidential campaign trail in very close quarters. I used it yesterday on an assignment to shoot a construction site for about five hours, and the pictures were of the same high quality as I expect. I've not noticed it before, but I'm not worried about it, I suggest you not worry either.

Thanks for your checking :) I am not really worried as it works like always, but as I still have a couple of days of warranty left I wanted to see if other Q owners have the same "problem". I already contacted Leica, so lets wait and see what they will say :)

Please let us know what Leica says, thank you.

  • 1 month later...

Hey guys :)

I got my Leica Q shipped back to Leica where they checked everything. They checked the lens and according to them the movement is absolutely normal and everything is normal. I also got my sensor cleaned!

It took some time but I am glad everything is okay.

As a matter of fact I am also pleased because this showed me how durable the Q actually is. It got some dents here and there as it is a tool for me after all but glad to see it stand up to the abuse :)
