jaapv Posted June 25, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is a strange thing - in anticipation of the M8 I bought a Tri-Elmar last year, thinking it would be an ideal lens on the M8, 28-35-50 =35-50-70, more or less. And in a way it is. With the lens on it is a powerful package. There is no denying it takes great photographs. But it turns out I never use it, and I cannot figure out why. Maybe because it is a first version with the short and stiffish focussing and the twitchy frameline switch? I don't think so, that doesn't bother me at all. I find I always reach for a prime.... Anybody else with the same "problem" or is it just me? Anyway, off it goes next week to ffordes for a commision sale.

wparsonsgisnet Posted June 25, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Jaap, I understand your quandary. Â I look at the images from that lens and also from the WATE. They're really beautiful -- but I only want one of the focal lengths. Â As a result, I bot the CV15 and am waiting to see what magic the gnomes from Solms are going to produce at the wide end. Â BUT, the CV15 images I get don't look like those the Guy posts regularly from the WATE.
vic vic Posted June 25, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted June 25, 2007 jaap.... ya.. me too.... PRIME lenses.... i was thinking about that lens more or less of the same reasons you mentioned but gave up even on the thought almost imidiatly... Â lense choice depends on my mood... so mood doesnt need zooooms and alike )
jaapv Posted June 25, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted June 25, 2007 It has nothing to do with bulk and weight either, Victor. I usually carry the Summicron 35asph and the Summilux 75 (sorry to talk toys....I need them to take photographs:p )
Guest Metroman Posted June 25, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Funny when I got my MP before Christmas I seriously thought about a Tri. But whilst waiting for it to arrive I sat down and looked at what lense(s) I had used in the past. Â I actually hadn't used a 50mm since the late 60's. I am not a fan of superwide and most of my stuff was done on 35mm or 40mm with some 135mm. In the end I went for the Cron 35/f2 ASPH and love it. I also had money left in the kitty for future lense(s). Â I came to the conclusion - for me - it was psychlogical, three lenses in one seemed a great idea but I had to admit I probably wouldn't use it enough to justify the purchase. harmsr Posted June 25, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted June 25, 2007 I was in the same boat. Â I am just packing up the Tri to send to another member here who is in the UK that bought it. Â I really struggled with that decision, as it is a very good lens - just restricted to F4. Â My issue is that I like to have a faster lens option and something telephoto along anyway. I never really ended up using all three focal lengths at the same time on the Tri. My kit gravitated more towards the (28 Cron, 50 Lux ASPH, & 90 Elmarit) or (35 Lux ASPH & 75 Cron APO). Based on this the Tri-Elmar became redundant as I would have the Tri, a faster lens of one of those focal lengths, and a telephoto anyway, so it was still three lenses. Â If one wants to use it in daylight as the only lens on the camera, it works very well. I was never able to leave the telephoto at home, so I always had 2 or 3 lenses and just preferred to have the primes. Â Just my $.02. Â Best, Â Ray
ericperlberg Posted June 25, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Being the person in the UK to whom Ray is shipping the lens, I'm hoping that my experience will be different. I have to admit that I've become a one prime lens only photographer (and only carry one lens at a time for several reasons) over the past many months and 3 focal length options seems like overload. But for the project I'm working on I think the flexibility will be helpful and the f4 not at all a problem. Â I've been shooting with the 28 2.8 for months. But too often the position I've wanted to stand in for my photo is in the middle of a busy road or some other unconquerable obstacle. I just got my new 35 1.4 which I also love but sure enough, there are times I see photos and wish it was wider. Can't get enough in the frame. Â Horses for courses, like most things photographic the lens either works for you or it doesn't. Or as Paul Simon has said, "one man's ceiling is another man's floor". Looking forward to a strong tailwind from Arizona. Â Anyway in the current environment Jaap, it won't be up at Ffordes for very long me thinks. sps Posted June 25, 2007 Share #8  Posted June 25, 2007 Not that I make pic's as pretty as you guys, but I'm using the 2d gen Tri-elmar for everything but low light. The great high ISO performance on the M8 is really helpful.  I only post these as you said you're not using it much. I'm getting pretty great results. Here are some full size JPEGS. I hope they convince you to keep the lens.  YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement  By the way, this trip to Alaska was done with a CV12 on an LTM8 adapter, the Tri-Elmar, a 135 Apo-Telyt and a Noctilux. This is my new travel set and it fits in a small bag (though the Noct is like a brick).

jaapv Posted June 25, 2007 Author Share #10 Â Posted June 25, 2007 I've been thinking about this; I think the concept of the leica M does not work with a "zoom" - for me at least, but I am a bit of a purist on my worse days....
jrc Posted June 25, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted June 25, 2007 I don't use mine much, either. I once did a lot of photogaphy under harsh conditions in the Middle East, and I keep thinking -- what if I get back in one of those situations where there's plenty of sunlight, but you really don't want to take the lens off because of the dust and sand? So I keep it around...but I really have no plans to do that kind of photography any more. When I go out now, to shoot a little on the streets, I find myself drawn to darker places, and there the fast primes are almost automatically better... frc Posted June 25, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Some like it, some don't. I do. OTOH there's always a fast prime carried in the pocket.

jaapv Posted June 26, 2007 Author Share #15 Â Posted June 26, 2007 That is funny- full-res Jpegs from the M8 should average about 7 to 8 Mb.
sps Posted June 26, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted June 26, 2007 That is funny- full-res Jpegs from the M8 should average about 7 to 8 Mb. Â I agree. I am using C1Pro, and setting it to max JPEG quality and letting it automatically generate the files from the DNG. They vary in a batch from 8MB to 18MB. If my settings were wrong, I would think that they would be applied universally to the batch and they would all have the same size. Â I guess I'll have to call tech support.
