Leica SL 90/280mm.............is it really that good

Recommended Posts

Thanks. But if I use the SL how do I compensate for now have 400 telephoto?

Use an R, F or FD lens on the SL.

Based on wildlightphoto's use and recommendations, I purchased a Canon 500mm f4.5 L FD lens some years ago. This lens is not too expensive, it is very fine optically, it balances very well on the SL, and it delivers good results with the FD 1.4 (and 2.0) extenders. Aperture and focus is manual, of course.

Another alternative that I use quite a bit is the Nikon 300mm f/4.0 PF lens. This lens is small and lightweight, and it works fine with Nikons latest 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 extenders. Since this is a lens without aperture ring, you cannot change the aperture on the SL when using a manual adapter. The default aperture is then f4. You can, however, preset the aperture to any value on a Nikon body by removing the lens while simultaneously pressing the depth of field button on the body. Any manual Nikon til Leica L adapter will work, and it will give you 11 fps. Very handy. With the electronic Novoflex Nikon til Leica L adapter, you can alter the aperture and you have a somewhat slow but still useable af on the SL, but now only about 3 fps.

Personally, I am slowly realising - without any information in support of my believe - that long lens(es) with super-fast and reliable af are not at Leica's top priority.

No ..... but I am tempted to get one and give it a try. Most big photo retailers here have a no questions 30 day return policy so it is a risk free purchase. Cheap by Leica standards.

The TC 1.4E theoretically should work as well ......

It's a pity VF isn't supported ..... as it is entirely lens based and switchable on the lens itself (as apposed to via the camera with SL lenses).

Being sensible, the better option is a CL and the existing 90-280 which gives you 135-420 with VR ........ and carrying a CL body is far easier than another big 2.3kg lens ....
