John Z. Goriup Posted July 4, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) 50 years ago, a young Ferdinand Piech, fresh out of engineering school, was instrumental bringing the 911 R out as Porsche's first 911-based race car. 24 were built, 4 prototypes and 20 "production" units, the remaining of which are some of today's most valuable and sought after Porsches. The yellow car is prototype # 003. The silver car is the limited production current 2017 Porsche 911R, built to commemorate the original, sparse and lightweight model. This car has frequently been described as 'the best 911 ever built'. Based on the GT3RS, only about a 1000 of these will be produced, and due to pressure by Porsche's loyal base of old-time enthusiasts will only be availabe with a conventional fully manual six-speed, three-pedal gearbox arrangement.............. already bringing crazy multiples of list price in the collector market.
