likealot Posted July 23, 2017 Author Share #21 Posted July 23, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can I ask, are the tripod heads interchangeable between brands? I've bought the MeFoto RoadTrip for nearly half the price on ebay and was wondering if I would be able to use heads from other brands on it in thefuture? LocalHero1953 Posted July 23, 2017 Share #22 Posted July 23, 2017 Most heads that are detachable will have a standard bottom screw fitting which can be used with another tripod. Where they differ is in the attachment to the camera. The two common ones are the Arca-Swiss quick release fitting and the Manfrotto QR fitting, which are incompatible. Many manufacturers make Arca-Swiss compatible heads, but I think Manfrotto QR heads are only made by them. Both types require you to fit a QR plate (of the correct style) to the camera tripod screw. Having tried both, I would avoid Manfrotto and stick to Arca-Swiss. Mefoto has Arca-Swiss compatible heads and QR plates.
lucerne Posted July 23, 2017 Share #23 Posted July 23, 2017 Fortunately, you've bought an item that does have plate compatibility with Arca. BUT Did you pre-check? Here's what is published on the MeFoto site. "Precision Matched Q Series Ballhead Dual action heavy duty ballhead with Arca-Swiss style compatible quick release plate." I have a few pieces of gear that use the Manfrotto style QR mounts, i.e. the Manfrotto magic arm which I love. Since I use Arca-Swiss style plates on my cameras my solution was to create this: Welcome, dear visitor! Total cost was about $15.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! To be honest I didnt even realise that there were different style fittings. Thankfully it seems that I have made the right choice by chance considering that I was considering the Manfrotto tripods for a while.
