I had to attend a meeting in NYC this past weekend & had the good fortune to have some free time there that I spent taking photographs of favorite places ...these sights have been so often photographed, that I tried to give each a bit different approach

here is the Washington Square Arch at the heart of my alma mater's "campus"

I think this grand arch does best photographed at night

the ceiling of Grand Central Station is a favorite of mine, with its constellations symbolically helping travellers find their way

the Flatiron building has long fascinated photographers, not the least because it is just around the corner from Alkit, Adorama & Tamarkin ...B&H used to be nearby as well but has moved further uptown & to the west

here is a shot of B&H that I thought some may like seeing ...it is truly a photographer's Mecca & a must visit for me whenever I find myself in the Big Apple

I was trying out my newly acquired CV 15 mm ...this has been listed as out of stock on their web pages, but I got lucky & they found me a silver one

you can see larger versions of these, along with some shooting information in my M8 gallery here

Arthur -

Your series is a touching sonnet to my favorite city, and all the images are excellent. Before they restored the arch at the north end of Washington Square, the carving of Washington's face had deteriorated so much I thought it looked just like Manel Noriega's, acne scars and all.

  • 2 weeks later...

I try to get up to the NE a few times a year for my "fix"

Paul I agree with you that the composition of the middle two photographs are their main interest ...I carefully composed the one of the Flatiron building to have the road marks recapitulate the building's triangular shape ...the one of the ceiling was hand held near the center of the main hall & was an effort to "get it all in" ...my next visit I intend to return at a less busy hour (maybe very early on a Sunday morning) & place the camera on the floor using a shutter delay to maximize the capture ...the ceiling at Grand Central has been a favorite of mine since a child

Stuart, the thought of Washington's face being = to Manuel Noriega's is a near abomination, but I know what you mean ...this visit was without question the best I have ever seen the arch ...no graffiti:) ...growing up in Philly, I would take the train to NYC even before I could drive ...I love the city & there are few more photogenic places on earth ...I genuinely appreciate your kind words

Arthur,

I like the second picture. Quite confusing perspective which made it interessting. I had to puzzle a bit to get it. Colours are good too, the red/white of the flag are a good contrast to the light green.

Good compostion between the block shape and wedge like buildings on the second picture.

Regards,

Andreas

If anyone is going to be in the NYC area next week, they might enjoy a new, opening exhibition on Wed., July 11th, 2007, 6-8 pm, at the Yancey Richardson Gallery.

They will host a reception for the artists at the opening of the exhibition "Easy Rider: Road Trips through America. The exhibition pays homage to the tradition of road trips in American photography.

You can read more about the exhibition at:

Photo Gallery Review: Home

or link to the invitation for the event at

I am not connected with the gallery, I just try to keep track of photo exhibits in the NYC area.

Steve H.
