Wet weather tips

I am going to be walking along the west coast of Ireland for a couple of weeks in August and was looking for some tips on the best protection for an M8 and 7 and probably a CV 15, 24 elmarit, 35 and 50 'crons and 75 'lux. The 'lux will not be in my day bag as it is for the pub.

I use a Billingham Hadley Pro but am a little concerned at the risk of sustained wet weather - better to prepare for the worst I say. I guess it is the risk of condensation and then fungus that most bothers me or am I worrying needlessly.

thanks,

Huw

Why, Billingham bags are British bags for British weather! Also good for Scandinavian weather which is why I like them. (The horsey image is also OK.) The neoprene that is laminated into the material make them the most weatherproof bags I know, except for a full Pelican or similar, with a rubber gasket. Just remember to dry the contents whenever you can. Extra batteries can travel in a small freezer bag with one of those plastic clips attached, while cards live snugly in the little plastic boxes most of them come in. Maybe the charger can benefit from the plastic bag treatment too.

Good idea to use the backup camera in pubs; whiskey, especially Irish whiskey, is even more dangerous than water.

Hugh: The only camera bag I ever owned is the Artist & Artisan 'Evans Walker' and it was fine for dry days but leaked like a sieve through the top zip and the fabric eventually soaked up water. Wife uses it as a garden tool bag now!

I have always bought Snowbee fishing bags for my kit. These were recommended to me by a photojournalist attached to my Marine Unit in the Falklands in '82. His reasons were :

a. They are extremely waterproof [they are designed to be waterproof].

b. Very rugged.

c. A damn site cheaper and do not look like a camera bag.

I currently have the 'Small Fishing' bag for when I lug everything with me. I use either the 'Trout' bag or the 'Game' bag for a combination on MP, CL or D2. Made my own foam inserts and liberally sprinkled with packets of silica gel they work a treat.

They also float as I found out in Norway one winter!

Setting bags and other external protection aside (thought about a totally watertight/proof Ortlieb satchel or pouch? Here it is: Product Description) I have only one extremely important piece of advice for the dreaded moment when e.g. the viewfinder fogs because of a moist environment:

Rip - yes: rip - out you battery and sdcard. Why? All digital camera's have some electrical current running even when the camera has been turned off. That current is able to corrode internal parts when condensation strikes and you do not want to know how!

I had a Canon 20D ruined in Borneo, just beause of this fact.

So beware!

Did the M8 developing team have access to the complaint desk of Canon?

I hope not. The complaint desk of Canon is the worst. It took me 4 months to get the camera replaced.

Leica is much better I gather.

But what good is a complaint desk when your camera fails and you are not in Solms? :-)

Gents - thanks for the advice. I might persevere with the Billingham for "normal" days and seek a Snowbee type solution for when the heavens open. As a German friend of mine likes to remind me, Ireland is the home of liquid sunshine. He's obviously never been to Wales.

Andy, am back in the UK next week so should be able to rummage in the attic at my parents. I am sure I had a Snowbee equivalent game bag, which is probably waterproof. The contents never got wet, unless I put something wet (and bloody) in there.
