Just a reminder that the 30% lens discount offer for people who paid for their M8 before the end of last year expires on Saturday 30 June. Your letter ordering the lens must be post-marked on or before this date.

If you're wavering, it's unlikely you will ever be able to order a new coded lens on such favourable terms as these. I bought a WATE and a 75/1.4 and I'm glad I did.

Thanks, Mark. You bought two lenses at a disount, huh? Indeed, I will order a WATE plus finder and will send in my order form to Solms on Monday. Does anybody know about the estimated delivery time of the WATE?

I think it's quite long because the WATE is proving popular and deservedly so. If you are buying a WATE, I agree that you should buy the Frankenfinder with it because you benefit both from the package discount and the 30%. Otherwise, buying the finder at list as a separate item is seriously expensive. If you don't like the FF (it's better to use than to look at), there will be plenty of takers for it...

I had the chance to play with the WATE plus Frankenfinder :D at the PMA in Vegas a few months back. Yup, I agree the function is just fine and the looks is ... well, kind of frankensteinish, huh :o ?

Wasn't the end of June also the supposed shipping date for the last of the cut filters? I need two 60mm...Also, I ordered the WATE probably a month ago or a bit more, and got the acknowledgment letter, but my credit card hasn't been charged yet. I understand they charge the card only when they're about to ship...so it's still gonna be a while, I guess.

Joshua, I ordered my WATE with finder in late January. I received acknowledgement of my order in three weeks. The lens/finder combo has yet to appear. I continually check my credit card account to see if the charge is posted.

On a bright note, both filters, 46 and 55mm, ordered early December are both here. The 55 arrived last week.

JC, if I recall, the filters are going to be available in February 2007... LOL

I registered for 6 filters from Leica, none have arrived.

OK, I just filled out the forms, attached my original receipts, after making copies of course, and mailed my order off yesterday.

I really don’t have the money, but at the savings it seems foolish to pass up the offer. Having two M8s, I ordered both a Leica Tri-Elmar 16-18-21mm ASPH w/Universal Wide-Angle Viewfinder and the Leica Tri-Elmar 28-35-50mm ASPH even though I heard that it had gone out of production and is no longer available. We’ll see. Total combined savings is about USD$2225.ºº and Leica covers shipping to boot.

What I really want is the Tri-Elmar 28-35-50mm ASPH for street work. If indeed it is no longer available, then I’ll be substituting it with either the Summicron-M 75mm or Macro-Elmar-M 90mm. I am already pretty rounded out from the 12mm to 50mm range with some duplications of Leicas and Voigtlanders. However, the Tri-Elmar 28-35-50mm ASPH would just make things so much more easier on the street.

I sent my order off for a WATE, but as I paid for my M8 by cheque I don't have a copy of it. Currently, I hoping that my bank can provide me a copy of the cheque so that Leica will accept the order.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Henry.

Out of curiosity, I just checked *bay; there is one WATE complete with finder there. Holy smoke, the current bid is already at $3,850.00 with a little more than one day to go  WOW.

Geoff, someone else received a response from Leica to say the normal Tri-Elmar has been discontinued with no replacement planned. Carsten says it's due to shortage for glass for the front lens element.

Mark,

I saw that mentioned too, and most likely it is correct, but this is the Internet and the Leica User Forum at that. Secondhand info and rumors abound, being repeated and conjectured as fact faster than you can say WMDs. I really like the posts about Apple never ever supporting the M8.

I don't know Carsten, other than he is from Germany, correct? So it would be helpful if all the repeated reports of discontinuation could actually be substantiated. It would be a shame if people held off on placing an order and missed out on the 30% off offer deadline only to find out it was still available.

Very simply, I’ll put a call into Leica, come Monday, to see what's up.

Well, there was a wild rumour for about 1 hour that the 28/2.8 had been discontinued until it turned out to be a clerical error. We're a nervous lot!

Hopefully, the guys visiting Germany will have discussed it directly with Leica and got

the full story, if there is one.

Well, there was a wild rumour for about 1 hour that the 28/2.8 had been discontinued until it turned out to be a clerical error.

You know, at the time I almost acted on that rumor since B&H had just gotten a few in stock.

Now, with the nicer weather, I've been out shooting on the street and basically just figuring out which set or single lens would be best for me to take along in order to keep things light. It seems, for what I personally do, that if I could only take one lens it would be a 28mm, and with two, a 50mm being the other.

Once I decided on a 28mm, the Elmarit-M 28mm ASPH was again out of stock, so instead, I ordered a Cosina Voigtlander Color-Skopar 28mm F3.5 along with a John Milich 9cm LTM8 adapter. It is known that the Color-Skopar 28mm F3.5 is out of production so I decided to act fast on that.

I understand that Zeiss farms out all but two of their ZM lenses to Cosina to manufacture and I tend to wonder where Leica should be considering German labor laws, demand, availability and pricing.

Personally, I would be buying Leica lenses, provided the quality, if they were available, regardless of cost for the most part, but I’ve been swayed many times by the Voigtlanders even when similar focal lengths were available from Leica.

So, with regards to the 30% off offer, I’m a little muffed. The prices seem good but again it is the availability and wait.

I’d rush to buy readily available compact, lightweight Leica designed lenses that were within the USD$750-1500 range regardless of speed and location of assembly. I’d think they would compete very well against Cosina and Zeiss offerings.

Currently, this does cover the following:

  • Elmarit-M 28mm ASPH
  • Elmar-M 50mm
  • Macro-Elmar-M 90mm sans Macro adapter

But some Elmars in the 18, 21, 24 and 75mm range could catch my eye and wallet and steer me away from Cosina and Zeiss offerings.

Geoff, the Tri-Elmar being discontinued is not a rumour. Someone received a letter directly from Leica that this was the case, and I double-checked with Leica Berlin, who confirmed it. The reason being that the front element is made from a glasstype which is either no longer available or has become too expensive, that is a rumour. I also understand that the orders were never that high for this lens. I suppose most M owners prefer fast glass, and f/4 can be pretty limiting.

I ordered the Tri Elmar with my 30% coupon. Got an email from Leica several weeks ago saying that the lens was discontinued and I should let them know what my second choice was.... I still trying to decide

Well on this Germany trip the WATE has been a huge favorite with everyone. I would order this lens without question if your on the fence than jump on it. The images are truly fabulous and i have every modern lens leica has on this trip . By far one of the most used between all of us. Since i have one and since i really used the Nocti a great deal to see if i REALLY want one. between the 75 Lux and 75 Cron i personally am staying with the Lux since i already have it but if you don't have either it would make me pull my hair out deciding , i think these 75s are the hardest to make a call. i have grown a fondness to the Nocti, i feel the money being pulled from my pocket for one

If anyone is interested in getting his first or second M8 (well, why not third :D ), I'm selling mine with the 30% discount on one lens still unfilled.

The discount is nominal, but I can order a lens at 30% discount within next week and forward it to the M8 buyer. PM me if interested.

Sorry if I partially hijacked the thread, but there's not much time left and it would be a shame to miss the 30% discount chance. :)

Cheers,

Marco
