on outdoor sunny shots i  feel like there is less range in the highlights with the electronic shutter..whats burnt is burnt forever & no chance of  recovery at all

It's possible. The Sony silent shutter makes 12 bit files instead of 14 (with the mechanical shutter). The SL could do the same although I've not seen evidence of any change yet.

 

Needs further investigation for sure.

ive copy pasted exif from rawdigger from 2 files; one at 1/16000 ES and the other  at 1/6400 MS, almost the same angle of a building facing the sun

 

 

the Exif is the same except for the block numbers referring to file start/end location on the card..and filename and shutter speed details.

 

the files sizes are almost the same.

 

so zero info on the exif as far as ES goes

Interesting.

I suspect there's a lot of R&D in this area at present. I expect to see a rapid reduction in electronic shutter read out times in coming years.

I thought I'd quickly try to see if silent shutter would be ok, shooting live music in a pub - as if framing acts with audience, it would be nice not to be clicking in their ear.

I've done it successfully, but of course it depends on the technology of the light source. I did some checks before the performance to see if it was worth it (and if not, I would have just enjoyed the event without photography).

The above is where I'm delivering photos to a 'client'

 

I tried it at a wedding recently too, but string light LEDs were placed everywhere - that also was no good.

A check with the electronic shutter activated when capturing a quickly moving subject - in this case bumblebees wings - shoot with the 24-90 at 90mm and 1/1000 sec.

 

Since the scanning of the sensor takes some 10ths of a second (something like 1/30 sec), quick movements can be expected to be deteriorated in some way or another. In this case, by clipping the movements of the wings. In case someone wonder - none of the many shots I did with the mechanical shutter activated showed anything like this.
