Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted June 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 1, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been using my Epson V850 scanner for scanning 4x5 and now 8x10 negs. Initially I tried Vuescan but it could never get the crop right. I tried silverfox but I didn't like the IQ of the scanned negs. By accident I found that when I installed the drivers for the scanner it also installed Epson own scanning software and Bobs your uncle it now scans perfectly. Amazing Neil
Advertisement Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Hi Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS, Take a look here Epson V850 own software. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ko.Fe. Posted June 1, 2017 Share #2 Posted June 1, 2017 To me, Epson scanning software is one of the best scanning applications I ever used. The rest is behind, IMO, VueScan is included.
250swb Posted June 1, 2017 Share #3 Posted June 1, 2017 The native Epson Scan is very good, a little limited at the high end but for ease of scanning and the results it is brilliant. For 35mm I use it for digital contact sheets and it does a good job on the thumbnails just set on 'auto'.
chris_livsey Posted June 1, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2017 The native software just does the job for me, it's bad enough scanning never mind learning a new program to do it and the Epsom is straightforward and versatile enough for me. Given the known limitations of the scanning equipment available at liveable cost expending too much effort is counter productive or at least too little return for the effort. I do realise others may well differ and good luck to them I wish them well I have no desire to convert anyone to my cause but post to support the OP and the replies, you are not alone. Keith (M) Posted June 3, 2017 Share #6 Posted June 3, 2017 Started scanning with an Epson Perfection 3200 a long time ago then upgraded a few years back to a V700. Over the years I have tried various versions of SilverFast but found them extremely user-unfriendly. Vuescan is OK but for best results plus sheer ease of use, Epson Scan is my default programme. 250swb Posted June 20, 2017 Share #8 Posted June 20, 2017 There isn't much context in your scans Neil, they are different sizes, does this represent different scanning and resolution settings, no indication of software settings, and also no indication of post processing so presumably they are both straight out of the scanner? I took the liberty of 'testing' the Plustek 120 scan and would say this is the type of scan I would recommend, flat and boring with as much information as possible (note the sky tones). But simply pressing 'Auto Color' in PS it came instantly to life and in that one click became far superior to the native Epson scan.
Doc Henry Posted June 20, 2017 Share #9 Posted June 20, 2017 Neil , why not use the Epson software ? I did it with my V700 If you have it , make a comparison ? I am for one "simple" software Henry

I played around with the Epson scan and found a surprising amount of detail in the shadows of that gloopy blue mess. To get the best from the Epson scan needs quite a bit more work in post. mikemgb Posted June 20, 2017 Share #12 Posted June 20, 2017 I use the Epson software exclusively, I love it's ease of use and intuitive interface. The auto setting does a great job on most scans and for those that do need extra adjustments are easy.
